Yup. I did not realize it before because I thought what her kid wrote was part of the error, I was like :wtf:

But it makes perfect sense when you ignore that. It is rather simple. The kid skipped a step on the number line.

I ignored that number line and the marks on it when I realized that this is very similar to how I do subtraction in my head when I don't have things to write with. :ehh:

This method of subtracting is illogical. Changing intervals on a number line includes the usage of an indicated break in the graph. Traditionally only one interval break is used on a number line.

This is more than a shift in the method of problem solving. It is a complete conceptual jump that changes accepted mathematical practices.

Its similar to changing the conventions of standard written English (no longer needing capital letters, periods, etc.).

If she cant answer that question she should be ashamed of herself....not obstinate.

Oh, and no bachelors degree involves "extensive study" of anything. Woman is a fool.

so whats the answer?

We need to get rid of these complicated methods :camby: Even though parents put on the whole "college educated but can't understand" narrative as a hyperbole, young kids don't need the scenic route to be taught as the first method of solving math problems. All this can be shown as reasoning and theory during free time, but not as the main way to solve.

the mother must have been on her period...

:smh:Nah, just a concerned parent who knows what matters for her child, and more need to follow suit forreal.

so whats the answer?
Jack subtracted three “hundreds” properly, but then subtracted 6 “ones” while neglecting to subtract the one “ten” which comprises 316. In the future Jack should be sure to subtract the appropriate amount of “tens” prior to moving on to the “ones” place. Furthermore, when done with the problem, Jack should kick his c*nt mother in the face for enabling him to be a disrespectful, entitled punk.

Keep in mind I've never once looked at the common core math standards, or had it explained to me. It's still pretty obvious.

427-300 = 127

127-60= 67

127-6= 121

Take a look at the number line.... Jack made 6 jumps of 10 units. On the 1st of the 6 jumps, he mistakenly stated that 107 was the difference of 127-10.
Which is exactly why this methodology is flawed. The number line is not in concrete intervals.

Jack only made the jumps, the numbers were written in by the people trying to solve it.
Jack's final answer was 121.

The numbers written in have nothing to do with the original question, though. Jack made 6 jumps of one unit (from 127 down to 121). The dumb c*nt mother assumed those were jumps of ten because she's a dumb c*nt. When she got "57" and it didn't jive with the "121" already there she threw a temper tantrum.

Why be critical? Maybe this is the way that Urban kids can learn math because they seem to have been struggling for the last 50 years-- with no change in the gap.

People need to try something.

Is it me or does it seem like you have to know the answer to the problem BEFORE writing the letter to Jack? If that's the case, then what's the point of the word problem? shyt seems more like an English question in some regards.

Common Core seems to be more to further the disconnect between parent and child. They want the days gone where a parent could easily help their kid with homework, so the child would only see the State as having all the answers. It's social engineering.
