I ignored that number line and the marks on it when I realized that this is very similar to how I do subtraction in my head when I don't have things to write with.

I think the point is they should be teaching simple arithmetic and not try an force kids to over analyze

We need to get rid of these complicated methods Even though parents put on the whole "college educated but can't understand" narrative as a hyperbole, young kids don't need the scenic route to be taught as the first method of solving math problems. All this can be shown as reasoning and theory during free time, but not as the main way to solve.
