Really enjoyed it and I feel like the ending elevated it from being a really good film to something great.

The tone and aesthetic of this movie feels very different from modern films or what I went in expecting. If you switch the music from hip hop/dance to pop and rock it could be an 80s film. In many ways it reminded me of Risky Business. Not because both films have sex workers but because of the blurred lines of transactional relationships coming to a head.

Acting was amazing. Madison was fantastic and I thought the guy who played Igor was stunning. Another thing that felt like something from an older film...a very reserved performance, stoic yet charged at times.

I agree about the ending, if you’ve ever met a girl like this it’s all trauma and trauma re-enacting. Unfortunately it’s far too common due to how much sexual violence happens. And these women are too scared to go after whoever assaulted them (for a multitude of reasons) so the cycle continues. That’s how dudes like Cosby rape for 60+ years with impunity. My last GF was raped shortly before we got together and she never reported it, and then she left therapy because it was too difficult and our relationship started to evaporate. There’s no way in hell this is a ‘best picture’ caliber movie but it was good.

Man this film could very well have "written by DJ Pooh" pop up on the screen during the intro, shyt is Players Club status, critics have to be trolling with these accolades. I guarantee it wouldn't be taken serious if the cast were a different race.

2019 was an insanely stacked year and Uncut Gems, while a great film, was a sleazy, stressful watch with not much fun.

I guess. More sleazy than a movie who's summary is "a prostitute with a heart of gold gets married to a Russian oligarch" though

I just compared them because of their similar filming style and they have similar energies imo

'Uncut Gems' was critically acclaimed breh. It got nominated for a lot of awards it just didn't rack up the wins like this.

Just watched this. For sure get the the Uncut Gems comparisons, but this was easier to follow.

Pros:
1. Madison was incredible. I love how she ebbed and flowed between hustling Ivan, then watching it all unravel. That ending scene was incredible.

2. The ending in general is perfect.

3. The first and third act are paced perfectly.


Cons:
1. For me the house scene is too long. But I get it, they damn near had the Armenian dude talk in real time from the church to the house. But it was still about 3 minutes too long for me.

2. Not enough exploration of the parents. But I get it.
