Sources: Raptors to waive former No. 1 overall pick Anthony Bennett

The Toronto Raptors will waive former No. 1 overall pick Anthony Bennett on Monday and sign veteran forward Jason Thompson for the remainder of the season, league sources told The Vertical.

Bennett, 22, played 19 games for the Raptors this season after returning to his hometown franchise as a free agent in September. In releasing Bennett and signing Thompson, Toronto will fortify its frontcourt depth and give Bennett an opportunity to seek an increased role elsewhere.

The Phoenix Suns may look into Bennett once he clears waivers, sources said.

even greg oden had some run :yeshrug:

Ya, but he had no business going first overall in the first place. Cavs are just straight retarded.
That's what makes the pick even worse is that they looked like idiots the minute they picked him. It's one thing if he was some highly touted prospect that was a no-brainer number one that got injured or was just a bust. It's another when you make a huge reach and then he turns out this bad.

To be fair, just a little, there was no clear number one overall pick that year and GMs apparently dreaded getting that pick because of that reason. The best prospect, Noel, went down with an ACL injury and was going to miss the year(and every single team that could have picked him should have) and everyone else was pretty meh.

I mean the best players in that draft went 14th(Giannis) and 27th(Rudy Gobert).

But that's what was crazier about the pick. In a year with no clear cut number and like 5 or 6 names rumored to go number one at no point did I hear Bennett in the conversation. Word was that most teams didn't even have him in the top 5 at all. At least with somebody like a Kwame Brown he was in the convo with Gasol, Chandler and Curry as being the top pick in that draft.

Should not have been the #1 overall pick, but yeah he will likely hold that honor.

Dude did NOTHING in the league. Olawakandi, Oden and the rest at least showed signs. Bennett never did.
