I wouldn't say that man. Many of the CET, MET (mechanical and manufacturing) and IET kats I have known were able to attain the 6 figure salaries (as engineers and engineering managers). shyt one kat I mentioned on here who is like a mentor to me is a director and got over 50 patients and he got a degree in EET (only has a BS degree).

If you are trying to get a PE then yes it is best to get a non technology engineering degree.

Most CETs, METs (mechanical and manufacturing) and IETs I have known don't even place the Techician part of the degree on their resume (which is also part of the tailoring your resume which makes up probably 60% of the work to get a job) and work right next to regular engineers and do the same jobs.

Once you get in corporate america often times getting these jobs are about experience, explaining in a detailed way on your resume what you have done, having a big name on your resume (which helps you stand out) and working high visibility/high money projects.

isnt that illegal?

I highly doubt it but who knows. If it is well I know a bunch of brothas and sistas who are working as engineers at some of the biggest fortune 500 companies in America and been working as an engineer for years and nothing has happened to them. Is it illegal to say on your resume that you did something when you really didnt? Is it illegal to say you make 10k more than you really do?

In corporate america almost everyone will tell you off the record that total honesty gets you nowhere.

As a youngster out of college a sista who was a HR manager told me straight up if you ain't at least slightly fluffing your resume and bumping your salary at least 10% you are hustling backwards.

Edit - check my post below.

Thing is I can only find engineering technology degrees online. I have to do an online school because I work full time. I have been seeing that a technology degree isn't as good as a regular engineering degree.

I hear you but also we have to be clear what we are discussing. A engineer technology and a engineering 4 year degree aren't the same as a 2 year techician degree.

Everywhere I worked. The 2 year degree technician degree person was the technician and the engineer was a person with a 4 year degree in engineering or engineering technology.

So we are all kind of using the technologist and technology as the same thing when really it isn't when it comes to the work force.

The longer you're out of school the less likely that a job will really check your degree. It all depends on the company; every job I worked at asked for a transcript.

I also worked at jobs where a EE degree gets to a design/analysis position where an EET get you technician roles. I've seen it firsthand. Matter of fact my first job used to hire mostly EETs because the could pay them less.

It all depends

Yes it depends. As I said I have seen dudes get hired as engineers with technology degrees all day and twice on sunday.

You can walk into any major DoD company (boeing, lockheed, Northrop Grumman and etc) and see whole hiring classes of engineering technoloy majors doing engineering work.

Yes all companies fresh out of school ask for transcripts, but as I said I know a bunch of engineers I went to college with work as engineers in aerospace, defense, oil and gas and telecom who have degrees in technoloy.

Even my brother in-law who is a Sr. Systems Principle Engineer in has a BS in CET (and yes he makes well into the 150s). Dude never had an issue coming out of college getting a job or being paid as an engineer.

:ohhh:

Damn ive been slipping. WHen these fukking recruiters asked me what i make i usually tell them the truth. Well I at least tell them i make whatever my W-2 says i made in the past year or so even tho my actual salary may be slightly less. Im salary but i can get OT pay for being oncall and stuff and on a good year that can add another 8-10K to your income.

I refrain from fluffing my resume because i dont wanna look stupid in interviews. If i put it on there i at least have working experience with it. If it's something i learned on my own (like say Ansible and AWS) but my current job doesnt use them I'll explain some of the work ive done with it and also explain how and if ive applied some of these skills to my current position.

I did exactly that with ANsible. I learned it at home and did some labs. I then installed it on one of my Linux jump servers at work and used it in some of my projects.

How was it & do graduates typically find work?
Southern Poly has a great reputation among employers in the South-East. I only know one of my homeboys who struggled to find work after graduation. Was an anomaly because he's super smart (book smart) but not necessarily in technology which is what we majored in. He eventually got hired by Level 3 Communications and been there since.

I did my internship with Hughes Telematics who is now part of Verizon Telematics (sure you heard of Verizon HUM service. I left and joined another company and had been there for many years until last month when i resigned.

What was your major? and where you are looking? Took me a year out of college to get a full time job..3.0 plus engineering gpa and several internships. Honestly I had no passion for mechanical engineering. It worked out better in the end.
