Yes,you act like people putting illmatic in theaters were any more than a couple nerds deciding to make it happen. When that shyt dropped,the general public didnt go crazy rushing to see it,so who cares nikka.

Nas,warren,bone etc dropped debuts in 1994.
All had major record deals and videos on bet/mtv,songs on the radio.
The fans that saw these videos,heard songs on the radio,heard they homies bumpin shyt etc decided to rush the stores making bone 4 x's plat and warren 3 x's plat in a small time frame. Nas would go on to take 7 years of being jocked in bias media (the source breaking their no perfection rule to give it 5 mics) to finally sell 1 mil.
Nas wasnt happy and changed his whole stance as an artist to get the success he really wanted THE END.
Time is illmatic was put in theaters for no apparent reason and made 165K,the end

I was a teen in 1997, and your understanding of hip hop changes as you mature (especially once you become a teen).

There was zero campaign to hear Illmatic. I somehow heard NY State of Mind in 98/99 (and liked the track) but didn't even know Illmatic existed as an album till 2002/2003. And that was because a friend of mine said, "yo, check out this album. It's really street."

There was no hype job that I saw. If there was, I would have heard Illmatic way before 2002/2003 (I heard IWW in 1997/98).

Illmatic is the word-of-mouth album. And as time went on, and rap became shyttier, it became blatantly obvious that it was monumental work.

So bossup and others can ramble away about the giant east coast conspiracy but nobody believes you.
