The next thing was just the worst idea ever. They had Cesaro do a shoot interview, the one where the guy who loses all his matches blames management. The logic here is baffling. He talked about how he won the Andre the Giant Battle Royal. So here’s the issue, if his winning the Battle Royal is a shoot, but his next six months of losses are a work because management doesn’t like him, that makes no sense. He put over his win and then said things got bad because the decision makers think he doesn’t connect. So he was cutting a promo on Vince’s interview with Austin. And even as much as that tries to do the “You all know everything on the show is fake, but this interview is a shoot,” vibe, when that leads to him losing a quick match, it makes the whole thing even more ridiculous. He said he doesn’t connect, he delivers. He said he’s the best wrestler in the company. That would carry some weight if he was booked to be something other than a guy who loses almost all the time. If you never win but you’re the best wrestler in the company, that tells us, during the show, that wrestling isn’t real. So then you challenge anyone to what we’ve established is a fake wrestling match, and then nobody reacts, and how are we supposed to expect anything different. He challenged anyone to come out, and Barrett returned. Barrett is a lot lighter after a major shoulder operation. He said, “It’s me, it’s me it’s BNB,” which is stealing DDP’s catch phrase. Barrett was supposed to be the face and played the face during the match even though he worked heel all weekend. I think they figured people would cheer his return no matter what, since he was being turned face by the crowd when he got hurt. But the crowd wasn’t into the match. Barrett won in 3:37 with an eye poke, which is hardly a face spot, followed by the bull hammer elbow. The idea that had Cesaro go out and do that promo and then squashed him made the promo a total waste of time.
