The game world is divided into depths. If you were to keep digging, at one point you won't be allowed to dig further. You'll hit the bedrock level, which is a depth layer of rocks that cannot be broken by anything.

Gonna build a GMB house
Every resource you gather or create will open up options for new resources. The console version is much easier than the PC version because on console whenever you have the resources it will show you all of the things you can make with those resources.
if you're looking for diamonds, they say the optimal level is level 12.
also, if i run across some diamonds and i dont have my pickage with the Fortune enchantment, i'll just take the coordinates down and come back. that way you get even more diamonds when you mine.

i got hooked on the shyt through a Greg Mill Let's Play on IGN a couple years back.

you don't level up. "level 12" is the layer 12 blocks above the bedrock
You actually do level up though, and yes, you do it through killing and mining.
I haven't played in a minute. what changes when you level up?

Diamond is rare and youll need an iron pickaxe to mine it. Its deep near the bed rock level of the game.
Obsidian is around lava and you'll need a diamond pick axe to mine it. You can get slick with obsidian though if you can find a water source near lava and direct the water towards the lava with blocks to produce obsidian.
The best stuff I've made is with water. I have waterfalls in my house and even one that surrounds my master bedroom in my castle.
Ya'll gonna make me turn the game on and do a stream to show off my creations.
I did it all on survival mode too. I've never been interested in creative mode.
