I didn't know his as THAT influential.
Maybe it was due to an attempt to preserve his image (cuz they didn't mention it), but I remember researching Sam in the early 2000's and they reported that Sam was beaten so badly, his head was damn near torned from his body.

Whoever killed Sam Cooke beat him pretty badly. The skin on his knuckles was also messed up. He fought for his life.
It was likely a group of men. Breh was probably drugged at the bar before being taken to that hotel.

James wrote that Cooke was so badly beaten that his head was nearly separated from his shoulders, his hands were broken and crushed, and his nose mangled.[58] Some people have speculated that Cooke's manager, Allen Klein, might have had a role in his death. Klein owned Tracey, Ltd, which ultimately owned all rights to Cooke's recordings.
They got into a tussle.
Franklin, though shorter than Sam, outweighed him by about 30 pounds. She told the police, “He fell on top of me … I tried to bite him through that jacket: biting, scratching and everything. Finally, I got up, when I kicked him … I run and grabbed the pistol off the TV, and I shot … at close range … three times.”
Two of the bullets missed. But the third entered his left side, passed through his left lung, his heart and his right lung. Sam fell back and in astonishment, said what would be his last words: “Lady, you shot me.”
Franklin claims that he got up again and ran at her. She hit him over the head with a broom handle. This time, he stayed down. When the police arrived, Sam Cooke was dead.

Right. It doesn’t take a medical expert to know that the official account of his death is some bullshyt.
A doctor from the Nation of Islam took a look at the report and concluded that the large lump on his head had to have happened before he was shot in the heart, not after.
So, Franklin’s claim that she hit him over the head with a broom after she’d already shot him in the heart is a bogus claim.
I knew he was a great singer, but I didn’t realize how special he really was as a vocalist . Like, I’d never heard that version of Bring Home to Me live (been listening to that album since I saw the doc) that he did in Harlem Square. He was able to sing and put that raspiness in his voice whenever he wanted.
