Help Desk is a good start but not where you want to be for life. Shadow a senior member of the team you eventually want to join, then help with projects on that time along with your HelpDesk duties.

I did Help Desk work as an undergrad but every year I did a project with the team leads (mapping network ports/installing APs, switches), the next year updating websites with the Web Team, the next year installing new servers with Systems.

After 4 years in college I was a Junior Desktop Admin, then Senior Desktop Admin, System Admin, now Systems Engineer specializing in Cloud Storage/VMs, and InfoSec....

But I really love the field and had an interest in Comp Sci since I was in elementary school.

Buutt it takes a lot of hard work. Kobe, MJ, Bron just didn't have titles given to them, they hustled for them....

You better start lying nikka, or work on some certs…

Sounds like you just gave up after the degree. Did you do ANY internships?

Regardless, you got to set yourself up. Have everything the job listing is asking for whether you got experience or not.

Network Engineer most likely, it's what my 2 yr degree was for

But I needed some general work experience before moving into that role

Does your current employer give you any kind of opportunity to learn or develop these skills? a Net Admin willing to give you game there at least? You may have to set up a home lab and just say fukk it and get some practical experience. Don’t want you to get caught in that help desk trap, I’ve seen so many talented and smart people get trapped there. You want to stay 2 years then get the fukk out lol. One crucial thing, make sure to get familiar with IPSec VPN tunneling, I just dealt with a situation that transpired from this. shyttt suckedddddd.

One thing about IT is you have to keep working. You have to keep studying, learning, developing your skills.

Look for internships, do shyt for free in your spare time, enroll in another school that has job placement, start your own LLC if you need to and just do shyt for people you know for free.

Get your experience any way possible. Because once you’re in the door you’re in. Every job is a stepping stone to what you want out of a career.

I did it :yeshrug:

I was my teachers best student. Used him as a reference and when they hit him up, he said it himself

Appreciate the info but yeah I got contacts with some Network Engineers at my job that I can hit up about shyt like that, haven't built a home lab or anything but I've set up some Cisco Switches and configured VLANS, trunk ports and VPN tunneling before during my classes as a part of getting hands on training so I'm good there, just need a refresher if anything

shyt, I’m on TryHackMe everyday I’m at work. Been slipping though lately but that’s basically nothing but labs to help you get experience. Don’t even need a home set up anymore

And when you go for an interview, blow them away with knowledge… not a degree.

Network too… probably the most important thing you can do. Hit up job fairs, be willing to relocate. I used to drive 80 miles ONE WAY to work everyday, just to do some bullshyt helpdesk and printer job. :hhh:

Now I’m an analyst and working towards becoming an engineer… could already do it if I wanted but I rather have more knowledge and experience. It’s gonna suck but it’s not permanent.

My classes put me up on Cisco Packet Tracer where in order to pass we had virtual labs to do on how to configure routers and switches remotely and I can set up my own experiments and play with them a bit, that helped me a lot

Word? Never heard of it. I typically just spin up VM’s at work or buy shyt on the company’s dime when i want to learn something new. Might be time to dump the Panasonic and make way for a cloud PBX system now thinking about it

Not my lane but I don’t even use VM’s anymore. Labs are literally online these days.

I did use Kali for a minute on my personal laptop but that was just for Udemy And CBT Nuggets labs.

Currently working on getting my Google IT certificate from Coursera.

My course teaches me about hardware (how to build a computer), software, infrastructure, IT security and networking.

Should've majored in this at college:mjcry:
Had experience with computers since I was 5.

Remember tinkering with Windows 95. Teaching folks how to use dial up and AOL. Rewriting Ethernet cables when DSL came out. Network Troubleshooting. Applying anti malware and virus programs. The only thing I didn't learn yet is coding. Got a course on Udemy that I'll check after this ends out.

I think getting with Google would be easier due to my practicality. This seems cool. Looking forward!
