I think society and your avg person has been dumbed down and lacks attention spans. Hell I heard artists a few years ago saying that 3 verses in a song is played out. The fans only want 2 verse 2 min songs
Are current rappers less smart than rappers of the past generations? Is that why the music is trash?

They don’t read (proficiently) anymore, so they’re not able to articulate themselves with expansive vocabularies, which until social media became the norm for basic human communication, was a mandatory, basic human skill.

I don't think they're stupid, they're smart for using social media the way they are, however when it comes to creativity and being original they're nowhere near that.

Today's educational standards are much lower than they were in the 70s and 80s. Also yesterdays rappers even if they weren't Muslim were heavily influenced by the Malcolm X and the NOI and one if its tenets was seeking knowledge so the average late boomer or Gen X rapper was more well read. So even a 'dumb' 90s rapper had more to say then todays rapper.
With that said even if todays rappers aren't book smart. I do think on average they leverage what they have better than yesterday's rappers.

Entertainment as a whole has been dumbed down .
the difference between then and now is that damn near the entire scene is dumbed all the way down vs a balance.
there are younger dudes rapping that are not dumb by any means but they’re not getting that push for whatever reason

Smart? I'd argue Gen Z is smarter...they just lazy as fukk. Lazy and a lower barrier to entry.
1. No culture of "being nice" or skill any more. The competition in rap has gone from bars to actual violence as the default.
2. Dumb shyt is selling (kinda), so that's what the cac execs are pushing.
3. Media and entertainment as wholes are VERY dumbed down as opposed to 25+ years ago.

Soon as studio equipment started costing $100 and social media gave every human on earth a voice, the game became saturated.
Back in the day you had to be dope to have a shot in the game. Studio time and equipment was hella expensive so nikkas was taking it serious when they made that investment.
Fast forward to today, now u got nikkas treating rap like the drug game. No barrier to entry.
Jeezy saying, “I am not a rapper” was a major sign of what was happening at the time. Then you have the south’s run of bubble gum, mumble fun, drug, dance clown rap that was all ran off the beat being “the star” coupled with strip club anthems, hooks, and sub par bars.
Rap is no longer treated as an art, its treated as a hustle
