wouldn't an athlete have to know it's a competition? i mean the horse doesn't know it's racing it's just following orders of the jockey and doing what horses do and run

I don't know if he knew what he was doing, but the jockey that rode Secretariat for the Belmont said he didn't touch the horse once and just let him run. So maybe they have some idea
