Are property taxes basically extortion?

My property taxes ain’t all that bad. It’s the income tax I can’t stand.

I have rental properties on the Eastside of Detroit. Ain’t no mortgage, these cribs were bought “as-is” fixer uppers, pre-pandemic for no more than 9-12K each for a cash sale. The price on homes went up after 2021 but go on www.buildingDetroit.org, auction.com, or fsbo it’s still some shyt over there to buy for cheap.

Me and none of the neighboring owners pay over $1100 annually for property taxes on any of those blocks or most Detroit blocks for that matter.

So every thing I got coming in is all profit. The key is to get in early.

So the property taxes are coming from your own pockets? How much you charging the tenants?

shyt I need to move to Detroit. $12k for a house is crazy.

Yeah I said it before, but if your house is paid off, you only got to pay property taxes which can be cheap like $200/month

One of the dumbest things ive seen was reading how someone literally sold off their house in the suburbs so they could pay rent subletting a room in an apartment with a bunch of roommates in nyc because they were "bored".

Property taxes pay towards maintenance of the roads that you drive, local fire and police departments, the school district, etc.. Sounds like a fair trade to me.

the tax on fuel pays for roads for the most part. but yeah property taxes mostly fund schools and municipal services.

I don't even care. once my house is paid, I'm gonna be shelling out $4-5K annually in taxes. that's like $400 a month or so, so who cares

Me too. I closed on my house at the end of Jan. Got my 100% first week of Feb. I am paying my property taxes in my mortgage but at the end of the year they are refunding me what I paid and I will not have to pay going forward.

In other first world countries income taxes are also much higher.

Is it a scam for the govt to tax your wages at a higher rate than your purchases? Because most govts including the US do. What is the your preferred method of funding civil services and infrastructure?

My insurance is about 150 per month which is rolled into my mortgage also


Thankfully with my property tax I now a 100% disabled vet. That means no property taxes. I have to pay this year because I did not get my disability notice until after I closed but my actual rating is effective as of last year. So at the end of year I will get refunded for the taxes I paid and I will not have to pay going forward

I used to date one of my neighbors, who's a lawyer and she's on partial disability from the army. however she has to pay property taxes tho.

my insurance is like $1900 a year and my property taxes are $4700 annually right now.

I have over 50% equity in my house, so I removed escrow from my mortgage, and put the insurance/tax money in a high yield savings account instead and pay it from there. I also use credit card to make the payments to get cash back since I'm gonna pay it off immediately.

it took one escrow analysis shortage where the bank said I owed them money, which made me get rid of having an escrow account. I hate that bullshyt.
