3. No one expects that they're the person who gets left out

5. It removes 2nd and 3rd dating options in the real world

6. Not having mates increases other criminal elements when people can't find ways to direct their energy into their relationship...it hurts human identity when mates aren't able to be found. Its just one of those truisms.

yeah the amount of Kents in a society might multiply 10 fold if the men to women ratio is off.

4. Its not necessarily straight people that get left out...wealthy gays can siphon up mates

It's very suspect but I could understand it, even though he is basically marrying his cousin but I've heard about this before and normally the family relations ain't that close it will be like a half brothers sisters daughter or some weirdness like that
I noticed a cousin is used more loosely in West african cultures. The kids of people my parents grew up with are considered my cousins and their parents are my aunts and uncles. Only times i see people do something similar in America is in the south, primarily in the black church. So a guy may grow up with a girl all through life and the girl is like family and essentially considered a cousin, but then they later start dating once they are old enough and maybe even get married.

Often times this is done for strategic purposes too if both families have wealth and eant to grow it.

Idk about that, lol married people still have sex with who they want and there is no consequence really. Either way its still a minority amount of men sleeping with and or dating a large number of women.

I doubt these reasons would work from a western viewpoint. There's a clash between collectivist and individualistic thought. It's all about number 1 over here in more aspects than marriage, and the reasons above seem to link back to community or respect for community. Great article.

Well you just have to accept this.

it won't only apply to straight people. Gays want mates too.

It skews the number of mates out there and people who can't compete will suffer even more.

And you don't have to be dating millionaires either.

"Work wives" and "Work husbands" might really become ACTUAL wives and husbands...and those are just charismatic co-workers, not the CEOs themselves.

The average dude making 150K a year might hurt dudes making 75K a year. And it just trickles down.

If even 1/5th of the population takes ONE extra person, you've removed a massive number of mates from the dating pool.

And its not to say those extra mates won't "date" outside of that legal union/marriage, but they could never commit to people outside of their marriage, and thus anger even more people.

obviously....but we are looking through a western lense. nazism and slavery were also valid in certain cultures at one time so I think its fair to critique a culture's norms.
how much do you know about their culture?

i'm no expert on wolof/senegalese culture but i'm probably more read on their society than the average Westerner :ehh:
then you should know that polygamy is tied to the man being the provider. They can't marry a woman if they can't provide for her and a couple of the reasons you named have to do with the woman needing a roof over her head. Woman are not commodities in their culture.

Depends. In theory, providing is part of the culture but there are plenty of stories from Africans of elders who had multiple wives yet did not provide for all of them. As for commodities, this was not argued other than to refute that "desiring more than one wife is enough" logic essentially equate a human to a commodity.
