The biggest problem here... is that this is even being discussed. Every time somebody black becomes successful there has to be a discussion about whether they are or should be accepted by the black community... Whether they went through the ringer like others... Whether they represent the same stereotypical attributes that we complain about being placed on us. Why can't we just let people live... why do we have to monolithically approve of every famous black entertainer.

Because i've hardly hear anyone discuss Aries Spears stand up. The few times it is discussed its usually about how long he's been using them same impression from his mad tv days damn near verbatim

Interesting thing he said about Chappelle and why he left, I've also heard his partner Neil and a few others touch on it briefly, even Chappelle himself in his Oprah interview spoke on it briefly, was that he was receiving pressure from the black elite in Hollywood to not portray us as a race in certain format; which I find interesting because looking back, it seems he had a lot of support amongst black Hollywood. I mean he had Spike Lee, Nick Cannon, Mos Def, Paul Mooney, Patrice Oneil, Q-Tip, and the Hip Hop community supporting the show. Who exactly amongst the black elite had an issue with his show?

I don't know if anybody answered this yet but

It gets deep and it's VERY believable if you ask me, but in short it goes like this:

Bill Cosby, Oprah, Jesse Jackson, Bob Johnson and Louis Farrakan all had issues with Dave's show. It started with Bill from episode 1 and the Clayton Bigsby sketch. He saw some of the shyt he was doing on the show and didn't like it. The show supposedly got on Oprah's radar because Rosie O'donnel was offended by the time haters sketch and it all trickled down for from there to the other people involved.

There's a whole breakdown and timeline where you even see Dave sending shots at them during episodes...that whole Oprah bit about him quitting the show to come live with her was actually him taking jabs. Dave has low key seemed to confirm some of this shyt in the aftermath.

Interesting topic about why it's important to be considered a real nikka in the hood and,on the other hand, having the hood just respect you for who you are.

I find being considered a real nikka an overrated title, given by the masses in the hood, to a fukkin celebrity.

You can't alott hood sensibilities to an institution who has issues representing the minority and is ruled by money and power, neither which the hood has.

Therefore, Russell and spears and key and peele don't need the hoods acceptance becuase everyone in the hood got they own to shyt to worry about and doesn't give a fukk about success in the entertainment business.

You go back to when Eddie was doing his thing and how Bill approached him, it sounds plausible IMO. Especially when you got Oprah involved and the Obama election on the horizon.

I agree 100% with his perspective in their portrayal of black characters. It's not necessarily about being from the hood or being hood it's about a connection that many black people have among each other despite how or where they were raised due to the common black experience in the United States. They don't really have that mostly likely because they were raised by white women in predominately white environments. As @SunZoo stated before they obviously know this and have used it as a boon in their comedy and it works (most of the time).

Lastly we already know how this conversation is going to go, either they are both unfunny c00ns that need to be smacked or they are hilarious and Aries his supporters are hating old washed up negroes. I think Aries was very much middle ground in his statement and we should not ignore that Aries worked with both of those guys for years so he does have some credible insight on those two.

He was trying to avoid shytting on them and of course Vlad and his line of questioning ended up making him look bitter but he didn't mean any harm. I just disagree with saying they weren't authentic in place of saying not as relatable.

They have a certain brand of comedy that the average black person doesn't gravitate towards.

I don't think it's their fault for it.

Their backgrounds are suburban nikkas that understand that they don't have enough of the black spectrum to reach out to the average black person. They acknowledge it in their comedy.

I think Dave Chappelle have enough of both and that's why he's was able to crossover.

Probably because black people, more than any group on earth, are judged by their most famous people.

And there's probably some kind of vested interest in seeing that the famous people who will (unfairly or not) be a face for your race...do not fukk it up.
