On a 98 Malibu the gages on the dash board dont' work. (All of them are out and it is not a fuse) I have had a cluster (whatever that is) put it in there and that didn't work. The mechanic (a reputable one) said i need to see an electirician about it but i just said bump it since it's my spare car. Also it jerks when accelerating forward and it jerks when it changes from park to drive. Confirm my suspcions that it is the transmission.
The dash issue and tranny jerks are probably two different issues
Cluster means that all the gauges are assembled on one circuit board so they cant be replaced separately you gotta change the whole thing looks like
and the back
In all probablity there is nothing wrong with your original or replacement cluster especially if most of the gauges are at their zero point..
Sounds like the problem is either in the wiring to the cluster or the power to the cluster check the fusebox under the hood release
pay attention to the 2 10A fuses in the lower right ( K and IPC/HVAC) and there should be yet another fusebox under the hood with some relays that should be tested too.
Are your daytime runnung lamps coming on? If not then you know its a power issue for sure since they run off the same circuit .
The tranny is probably jerking because its either low on fluid or the filter is clogged..you should get a filter replacement..the filter is in the transmission pan and it should only take about an hour or so to do this you can get an independent joint to do this for about $250 or so in total since malibu filters are only about $30 that should stop the jerking and save your tranny from further problems
DO NOT GET A TRANNY FLUSH...i repeat DO NOT GET A FLUSH..flushing only replaces the fluid and may shoot the dirt from the filter back into your tranny which will make things worse..insist on a filter replacement ... they will still fill it up with clean new fluid and a clean filter.
check those fuses and let me know.
