Hey, Ive been shopping around for a cheap early 2000s car that is a real gas saver, reliable, and that can hold up in the winter months, that i can get full coverage insurance on.

What brand, make and model should it be and how much should i expect to spend on it?

:leostare: The best value ive found so far in this class is Saturn..you get good MPG and alot of features like ABS ,traction control, leather seats, remote ,power doors windows trunk.

Its cheap to maintain, every part is available, any service center can fix it and because of their safety features insurance is also low

You can get those features in other cars but end up having to pay quite a bit extra for them you can get a 2004--05 ion with all those features for about $4000

if you want a honda or nissan for $4k you would probably have to get a super high mileage one or a much older car .

Is premium gas worth it?
Does it really make your engine better?

Only if your engine is tuned for it. If not you're throwing your money away. The basic answer is no, it's not worth it, but if you've got a turbocharged / supercharged car or a car with an engine with a high compression ratio, then yea it's worth it.

:ehh: ..Ive seen 10 year old cars with the original belt and 150,000 miles but youre right Hyundai use an interference engine design so a broken belt will mean a destroyed engine so you dont wanna push it.

If you have the money i say do it now and get it over with....but you have at least until 75k ...i have never seen a timing belt go before that 70-75k mark under normal use

40 bucks....

I actually ended up using some dumbbell weights I'd been using as fill.
Did the trick

:pachaha:

Didn't realize they were that cheap. Is that an autozone pick up?

It cost me the same amount to do it myself as pay someone, I never noticed that before either. I also have a jug of oil, I have to get rid of as well now.

Advance auto..autozone should have some too..they work pretty good..take the used oil to autozone or o reilly they have free recyling for oil at most locations.

:skip: I dont do oil changes myself even for my own rides..its cheaper to have jiffy lube or whoever is having a 19.99 special to do it..after i buy the oil and filter and count my time doing it ,cleanup and disposal its just not worth it .

I only change oil as part of rebuilds and major engine service....i dont even remember the last time i got under a car for just an oil change

yeah, was feeling it today since it was nice out.

cost me 60$

6 quarts and a mann filter

:shaq2:

@the mechanic what are your thoughts on sea foaming engines? I've only done it twice, thinking about doing it again next oil change. You're supposed to change your oil again in half the mileage though right?

:sadcam: No its after 100 miles or so..it works great but it thins out your oil and the combustible vapors throw off your emisiions contol so you dont want it in your oil for too long.

I prefer this stuff

Nkp-ckvl8A3bV2h8ppZzXYJOM9YA1vIceFqFQrWQEsVIziVCpJNbPcLm8IuRW_GQJ9yl8NwouOIIwMxjV4RKtsTb-raaKVQ7cC571krOGRaldBNcjEdN6xGjDkJyGtaUmf1BJMMS9c83cqyHL67-YDTdKYHA_UZT0r_3YicWBA=s220-c

its like a laxative for your engine..throw it in run the car for a few minutes and drain then put in fresh oil and a new filter...instant gratification

hmm, with oil or without? I'll look into it.

My engine needs some love. Sounded great today after the oil change.

The dash issue and tranny jerks are probably two different issues

Cluster means that all the gauges are assembled on one circuit board so they cant be replaced separately you gotta change the whole thing looks like

and the back
535clusterboardandcapacitors.jpg

In all probablity there is nothing wrong with your original or replacement cluster especially if most of the gauges are at their zero point..
Sounds like the problem is either in the wiring to the cluster or the power to the cluster check the fusebox under the hood release

1998-Chevrolet-Malibu-Fuse-Box-DIagram.jpg

pay attention to the 2 10A fuses in the lower right ( K and IPC/HVAC) and there should be yet another fusebox under the hood with some relays that should be tested too.

Are your daytime runnung lamps coming on? If not then you know its a power issue for sure since they run off the same circuit .

The tranny is probably jerking because its either low on fluid or the filter is clogged..you should get a filter replacement..the filter is in the transmission pan and it should only take about an hour or so to do this you can get an independent joint to do this for about $250 or so in total since malibu filters are only about $30 that should stop the jerking and save your tranny from further problems

DO NOT GET A TRANNY FLUSH...i repeat DO NOT GET A FLUSH..flushing only replaces the fluid and may shoot the dirt from the filter back into your tranny which will make things worse..insist on a filter replacement ... they will still fill it up with clean new fluid and a clean filter.

check those fuses and let me know.

Appreciate that bruh. My daytime running lights are stiil running but i do think its an electrical problem too. And ima check that filter out cuz i keep it on full as far as transmisiion fluid is concerned and there is no leak so i hope that its just the filter.
