Because the murder charge in a domestic is only getting pushed that far because of eyewitness accounts. If it was self defense, then he wouldnt get a murder charge. And since it wasnt self defense, we have to know that he didnt shoot the kid in the middle of the altercation (self defense), he did it after (murder).

Yeah we don't know the details of the case. Was the dad 140lbs and the son a 180lb high school linebacker? Was the son beating his step-dads ass like he was trying to kill him? Don't think you would ever need to kill a kid in this scenario, but need more info to know for sure.
