Good sir,
I am certified and I said before that I KNOW they teach you to unload the mag but "I" wouldnt unload on a close relative unless they were packing...I'd like to add I'd prolly pop one off if I was hit hard because I cant defend myself against a 150-200lb man.
They teach you to assess the situation quickly and disable the person. If they wanted you to kill, all instructors would say, "aim for the head"
It's not natural to go against training though. They teach you that. In fact the specifically teach you that when they teach about shooting.
If you empty the mag, reload then empty again that's unnatural. If you shoot 3 times, run, shoot 2 more times, pop up and shoot 3 more times that's unnatural.
They understand through ballistics from what angle a person was shot at, from what distance. It's literally how they tell the difference between someone being executed or self defense. It's the reason most self defense cases fail (which can be good or bad, meaning sometimes the good shooter goes to jail and sometimes the bad shooter goes home).
They know when a person doesn't really shoot themself and a gun is placed on their lap. They know when you say you're " cleaning your gun" and it "accidently" went off when in reality you stood over them and shot them in the chest.
Most civilian places that teach 2-3 shots teach that because they don't want you to overkill. Police departments teach mag dump people they have insurance and free lawyers. It's easier to be trained to shoot 2-3 times and not over shoot rather than mag dump and stop at 3 rounds.
I know I'm atleast pulling the trigger off gp twice. Unless I have a shotgun or bolt action style rifle.
