Average American watches 5 hours of TV per day

At first I thought this is :scust::flabbynsick: this cant be true but I know alot of people who come home from work and watch TV from 6-12 then go sleep and then go to work & continue this in a cyclical fashion.

Specifically, says Nielsen, here’s the average weekly usage for ascending age groups:

2-11: 24 hours, 16 minutes.

12-17: 20 hours, 41 minutes.

18-24: 22 hours, 27 minutes.

25-34: 27 hours, 36 minutes.

35-49: 33 hours, 40 minutes.

50-64: 43 hours, 56 minutes.

65-plus: 50 hours, 34 minutes.

By ethnic groups, Nielsen finds that African Americans watch an average of 218 hours of television a month. Whites watch 155.3 hours, Hispanics an average of 123.2 hours and Asian Americans an average of 92.3 hours.

How much TV do you watch every day on avg.? Including Netflix and TV shows you watch on your laptop?

How much TV you think is too much?

I don't even watch a full hour of television a day.
Yesterday was the first time I watched Netflix in a few weeks, and I caught like 45 min of an episode of House.
I may have the Fareed Zakaria show playing in the background while doing homework.
I don't even know where people are getting the time to watch more than 10 hours of television a week.

There's absolutely no way this is true. They have no way of knowing how many people in a household, or if multiple people are watching the same show, kids, etc...

Nobody I know has ever watched 5 hours of TV a day.

One football game is 3 hours. I can see it being true. I especially believe that blacks watch the most media of all ethnic groups.

They ask households to participate at random and generalize from that. I had to do a study on how Nielson get their ratings and how accurate it is, Also had to acknowledge chances of bias because people who take part in this, may be avid TV watchers anyway or may do so more (or less) because they are being observed. But imo its accurate enough to make some assumptions about how much TV people watch .

I also know a lot of people who come home from work or school and watch TV until they sleep. It's quite a bad unproductive but common habit but that's how I think most TV watchers get their 5+ hours a day of TV.
