Baltimore City student passes 3 classes in four years, ranks near top half of class with 0.13 GPA

Not everyone can afford tuition.

My parents sent us to private Nursery, Pre-K, and Kindergarten, and Catholic elementary. The demographics at both those schools was pretty good with about a 50/50 black and white with students, but NO black or non white teachers.

We had the option to go to catholic high school, but we chose to go to public high school, but by that time, we had a relative that lived in a better town, and we used that address to go to that high school, and it was a better quality school, with about 50 percent black, 30 percent white, and 20 percent everything else, and a good mix of black and white teachers and high ranking faculty.

Since my mom gave me the house, the neighborhood has gentrified, BUT those people do not send their children to the local public schools, and there is little effort to improve those schools.

Even before gentrification, two of the neighboring white towns were supposed to send their kids to the local high school, but they somehow made a deal to allow their kids to go to a high school that is 20 minutes away. And only the kids in those areas are allowed to go.

I read an article that the city makes 4 million a year just from parking fees downtown and the beach area. Where is that money going?

Oh yea no doubt. I’m blessed to be able to afford it. As far as where the money goes it’s anybody’s guess

Yea I agree. He can go to CCBC or BCCC and likely change his scenario if he puts in the work. My little bro was kicked out of his zone middle school at BCPS. Then kicked out of the alternative school he was sent to. Then kicked out of a private school that a mentor paid for him to go to lol

he then did homeschool for the last few years of high school. Went to community college, then transferred to a 4 year and graduated with a 3.8 or sum shyt.

shyt I had a 1.8 coming out of HS my damn self. Schools and the community have to do a better job of helping students self-identify with education because if not, our students will continue to not engage or give any effort at all

Tbh, the L's go to everybody involved.

The system failed, but in a sense its probably what it wanted because there's no reason he should pass along if he wasn't doing the work along the way. With all the amount of state testing that goes on they see what he is or isn't capable of.

The school failed because they should've been in direct contact with the parent to track his progress. If he's not showing up or there's no mentorship of some kind then at least they have a track record. Regardless, they should've reached out to make sure he gets what he needs.

He failed because he rather skip than going to class. 200+ is ridiculous, but if he figures he's gonna pass anyway then what is the reason for him to keep going?

The mom failed because she didn't keep up with his progress. I understand she is working 3 jobs is alot, but that's not an excuse. My granddad did the same for my mom and uncle and was the strictest out of my grandparents so that's not an excuse. Out of 4 years she should've tried to get into contact with somebody to see how he's doing. Especially, since most stuff nowadays is online for her to check.

I say this as a former teacher.

0.13 GPA and finishing near the top of your class is an image of the school and system. I applaud the mom for reporting this to the media, even though she's apart of the problem.

The bill systematically fukked over poor and underperforming schools in almost every way, ensuring that they would either consistently decline in quality or become worthless standardized testing mills that no kid in their right mind would ever want to attend and no parent would ever want to send their kid to. It was the worst single step in education quality in my lifetime.

I literally do not know a single educator in real life who thinks that NCLB improved the quality of education that kids receive or their schooling experience.

Agian was the kid left behind or was he a degenerate that didn't want to go to school or learn?

School has plenty yo answer for, but where is personal responsibility from the home in all this?

Just go get your GED when you turn 18. Why spend 4 more years or any amount of time when you’re of age and can just study and pass one test

True, but we are talking about 200 days of school missed though lol.

I know of only one person who was missing days like that high and that was because she was spending time with her boyfriend lol. She was really smart, but just didn’t care to show up. Still passed to graduate though, but they didn’t let her walk across stage.
