Baltimore City student passes 3 classes in four years, ranks near top half of class with 0.13 GPA

United States school system in general needs an overhaul, but more so in prdominantly Black neighborhoods where most cities school system have basically abandoned them like a zombie outbreak happened there.

I mean we have a couple of D rated schools down here and maaaaaan...all hell was raised. School board hit these schools with "Yall got 1 year to get this shyt right or you're being shutdown"

How the hell was that school allowed to get to that condition?

I did absolutely NOTHING in school and graduated with like a 2 2!!!!

Unfortunately, that requires a collaborative effort from multiple parties that doesn't usually happen more times not. Case in point of this story. Family, friends and the school system all failed in this situation as he seems to have slipped through the cracks until it was too late.

Well clearly if everyone is failing then no procedure will work. Like I said, it's useless to talk about "they shouldn't social promote him" or "they shouldn't force him to repeat" if he's just getting recycled through a failing system either way.

Like I said earlier, unless we ourselves are willing to intervene then we're just passersby on the freeway rubbernecking at a disaster.

I see people blaming the kid, the mother, the father, the hood, the teachers, the district, and the politicians...


I'm not sure if I caught it, but did anyone blame themselves for not being part of the solution earlier?


The truth is, we can talk shyt about the father who ain't there but are we doing anything to make sure fathers are staying in theirs kids' lives? We can talk shyt about the mother, but are we doing anything to ensure that mothers have their shyt together? We can talk about the kid not doing his part, but are we mentoring young men to make sure they learn how to do their part? We can talk about the school system failing the kid, but are we doing something to contribute to improvement in failing school systems so they stop failing kids?

Politicians ain't gonna fix this. Teacher unions ain't gonna fix this. People who live in the suburbs ain't gonna fix this. Families that are already falling apart ain't gonna magically get their shyt together and fix this. Either those of us who care about that shyt step in, or we just accept that we're okay with the failure.

And make no mistake...the school in this condition is an attack on that community and that city.

We all know how Baltimore is viewed in the public eye as a black, liberal, city. This would have been nipped in the bud in a conservative or white city.

This is white supremacy black people. They were aware of the conditions.

With that said, I don't remove blame from the community for fostering a culture of failure.

The issue is that social promotion doesn't really work but all the data shows that forcing them to repeat the grade doesn't work either. If you do social promotion then a lot of them end up becoming 12th-graders without learning or being ready to graduate. If you force them to repeat the grade then a lot of them end up just dropping out. Outcomes are shytty either way.


When I was helping design a charter school, and later working in a very good school, this was one of the biggest issues we struggled with. The only way out we saw was very heavy early intervention during the school year and then summer classes between school years. You have to do everything possible to keep them with their peer group AND ensure that they've actually learned the shyt they need to learn to keep going. There's no easy way out so just arguing about "should we force him to repeat or should we social promote him?" doesn't solve any problems because the outcome is failure either way.

As said earlier in the thread, it's an all-around failure.

It's a failure that the mom didn't monitor her child's progress as education starts at home. It starts with her.

It's a failure that circumstances/systemic issues put the mom in a position to work three jobs so she wouldn't have time to effectively monitor.

It's a failure that the school just let it happen to HALF of the would-be senior class. It's a failure that only one parent conference was requested. It's a failure that they kept promoting the kids when they weren't deserving to be promoted.

Again, I think you fail to understand what our problem with "No Child Left Behind" is cause you're flexing this weird narrative based on the name of the bill instead of addressing the issue. The problem with No Child Left Behind was that it ruined schools, forced them to get rid of anything that would actually motivate a kid to be in school and replaced it with just constant standardized testing and test prep. I don't even consider most test prep to be meaningful learning and a lot of the kids don't either. It's no surprise when folk don't want to show up to sit in a desk and waste their time.


In terms of the family and personal responsibility, a LOT of us have spoken on that issue already in this thread. You got something to contribute to that or are you just gonna keep with that weird "blame the democrats!" shyt and whining about personal responsibility without proposing a solution?

The solution is this kid need to take his dumbass to school and for the parent to actually know what the status of their kid is at all times.

Let's take it a step further....let's break the cycle of a lack of personal responsibility or personal investment, so things like school choice or moving to places where school rates are more than reasonable or not fantasy ideas.

You need parents that are involved. If you have the opportunity to get on a school board, run for election. Something good could from her exposal.
