This is a terrible argument, you can't base your claims on what you haven't heard at a barbershop. That's #1.

#2. News has always been tailored to local issues within your community. In this case it's natural that people would care more about this issue than where the shoes come from. He isn't stating issues abroad aren't acknowledged greatly ... but they certainly aren't given the same attention as ones here of equal, or even slightly lesser importance.
