Fresh out of college, was job hunting and kept getting rejected.

There was this one job that stood out and I was like :manny:

End up getting the job and the Director called me personally and wanted to negotiate salary. I was like :lupe: $50k

She was like :picard: $50k....naw we starting you at $80k with a bunch of crazy benefits

I remember I was on the bus when she called and was straight :gucci::gucci::krs::ohlawd::mjcry::mjcry:

A manager that kept it 100 on a starting salary...nice :myman:

Not gonna lie I def lucked up into a better paying salary. Put on one of the GOAT performances in my interview:wow:

Increased salary 25k in a year n half . Sometimes it’s really about how bad you want it . Some shyt happened with a prior job I got fed up & went looking. Literally looked for something everyday. Re did every resume to fit the job . The job I ended up getting had a set number of applications they could accept. Had I not been on my square I would have never seen it .

Yea, my current gig was 20k increase on what I was making in my previous job. fukked up thing is I turned down a job that paid 30k more! Anyways, I don’t consider it luck.

To answer the OP. First legit job was IBM...Got it through connections. Helped me in the early part of my career as IBM on a resume deff helps.

But after that I got jobs through my own hard work. As a black breh in tech I’m proud of that cuz I’ve had to navigate through the :mjpls:

I did brehs, I really did. I had an episodic career leading up to the job I have now. Bouncing around spending a couple months or a year at a new job with nothing stable. Had a job in management for 3 years that was a dead end with “ok” pay but now I’m wfh with one of the largest corporations in the country that will keep me employed even during a depression (taxes). I’m thankful everyday for my job making the best money of my 15 years of work so far. :mjcry:

Got hired by a big bank with precisely 0 financial experience. My background is very weird being a veteran and a esthetician so I mean it kind of helps as I have the gift of gab and I'm fly so the lady who interviewed me was enamored. I interviewed on a whim on a whim as I had just quit my job during corona because I could't deal with the fukking idiots any more. I asked for the bare salary. A few weeks later after the interview they called back told me I got the job, plus 10k more than I asked :dwillhuh: my homeboy of damn near half my life was my reference as he already worked three and had advanced. I had to buy that nikka a bottle of top shelf when I got the news.

It still seems unreal sometimes because I'm lost as fukk :mjlol: but they said they expect even people with financial bg to be lost for a year minimum so :yeshrug: we bout to run up the score on hey ass. Its prime job security, far less hard work, can work remote permanently and double my income. I feel blessed

I did.

I got my GED, never went to college and bounced around jobs until I applied to my current position years ago.

Zero sales experience and no experience within my field (architecture and design) and 7 years later, I'm one of the companies top salesmen raking in pretty easy commissions on every sale.

I like to think in ways I "faked it til I made it", but also know it comes down to luck, the confidence you exude and being in the right place at the right time.

Fresh out of college, I started doing my part time retail job full time. Applied for different roles with my degree but it’s that catch 22 “you need experience for this role which you won’t get from us.”

I didn’t mind my retail job because I was making great commission. I’m very friendly with customers and this one in particular changed my life. I had a long convo with this Jewish guy. Told me He worked as the regional manager for a financial consultancy firm. Told me I would be good for it. I had nothing to lose and used him as a reference.

After a few interviews I got the role. They paid for my certificates and trained me up. Although the money was good, I started getting head hunted by major companies. Next thing I know, I’m travelling to different countries and making more money than I ever imagined.

So yeah, luck played a huge part but just being friendly and interested in people, opens up more doors than you can imagine. Although I had to deal with so much :mjpls: and seeing incompetent CACs get promoted and make more than me, it made me realize this game is rigged. Better to work for yourself in the end.

Im still navigating through all that. No big break yet :mjcry:

Keep at it. It can be frustrating but keep going and make sure you keep learning and adding new skills. Just don't let them keep you in a role too long. Be control of your own career progression.

Sales is fukked up though. You can be a top seller then lose your job after a down month. Then where do you go? I guess sales jobs are plentiful anyways. Getting the role was probably a lot of luck but you were able to hold it for 7 years...that is all skill.

houston.
Moderating studies with participants, analyzing data (typically listening to the recordings, taking notes, organizing the notes into categories and themes, collecting good quotes, etc.), writing up the findings report (typically PowerPoint slides with a lot of visuals), and presenting the report to stakeholders.

If you like doing qualitative research, a UX research job would be perfect for you.
That sounds dope. I'd definitely take a look at it. I see you're in Houston. We should connect.
