This is the first official thread for a series I'll call 'Best Rapper Alive'. Basically, in this thread (http://www.thecoli.com/threads/revi...list-how-can-we-make-it-more-accurate.465427/), I discussed Complex's article that covered this very issue.

I thought we'd do a Coli spin on things and vote for who we believe to be the rap MVP of each year. I will be going from 1985-2015 but the threads won't be made in ascending or descending order. Just random.

Basically, I will be listing contenders as poll options for MVP of any given year and y'all get one vote to vote for your MVP.

POINT SYSTEM
I will only reward the top 5 finishers of each poll.

1st place = 10 points
2nd place = 5 points
3rd place = 3 points
4th place = 2 points
5th place = 1 point

The reason the remaining 4 places matter is because when all is said and done, I'll be tallying up points to see who finishes in the top 10 ever. This is done to reward consistent top 5 placers in multiple years even if they never won the MVP for one given year.

CONTENDER PRE-REQUISITES
There's only one real pre-requisite. You must have a project released in that year (whether an album, mixtape, EP or similar). This matters more to me than it does to you guys since I'm making the poll options, but just so y'all know this is the angle I'm coming from. Snoop Dogg cannot be in contention for 1995 for example.

As for groups and duos, if there's a standout member I will put them for contention if I deem them worthy enough e.g. Andre 3000 for 1998 or Ice Cube for 1988.

As for number of contenders per thread, it will depend on the year. A year like 1994 will likely have 10-15 contenders (max poll option is 15), but for 1985 it could be 5-6 only.

If your desired contender for any year is not one of the poll options and you plan to vote for that person, please make it known in the thread so I can add a poll option. DO NOT complain about an artist missing if you don't have intentions to vote for him/her.

The list is merely preliminary and if you want to vote for someone not listed - just reply to the thread and ask. The list isn't exhaustive and meant to represent every rapper who had a great year any given year. The list is meant to be interactive. I have left spots open for people to be nominated.

-----------------------------------------------

1 year away from the new millennium...1999 we in here!

I thought I'd also make a new hashtag for y'all to follow, so you can keep up to date with every thread release. Let's go with #BRAColi.

--------------------------------------------------

Here are the results thus far (10/5/3/2/1 point system). If you see a name/name, it means they received equal amount of votes and are registered in the same rank spot.

idk y'all this is tough

Mos Def off the strength of Black on Both Sides is my front runner right now

my favourite album was Operation: Doomsday so DOOM is in contention for sure

Nas was productive that year but not so great imo. I Am alright but Nastradamus....fukk that.

Nas is Like
:ahh:

maybe his best song

HOV releasing Vol. 3 at the end of the year.

Can't ignore Eminem who released a very strong "debut" album (depending on how you view Infinite).

Dre released the massive 2001, but one has to question his rapping credentials and thus his chances at winning this year.

gonna have to let this one marinate a little before I decide.

Nobody had a clear perfect year like DMX in 98, Nas and Jay in 01, 50 in 03 or Kanye in 07

In 99 it's between Nas, DMX, Juvenile (lol how you forgot him??) and Jay-Z

Black Thought, Mos Def and P.Monch would be solid choices just off the strength of their performances alone

Snoop (forgot him too, NL Top Dogg was phenomenal, and B Please blew up, plus his appearances on 2001!), Silkk (Made Man was a hit, but his worst album ever) and Dre had a great great year as well

Gotta give it to Juve, sold tons of records, 400 Degreez is a bonafide classic album, Guerilla Warfare is still talked about to this day, and he was the main factor for Cash Money blowing up

I lived through 1999 hiphop brother

- 400 Degreez was re-released in 1999
- Juve was one of the Hot Boy$, their album Guerilla Warfare crushed them buildings
- Juve's G-Code came out in december 99 off the strength of Cash Money's power/fame

I voted Dr Dre cause 2001 was extremely impactful and those songs were everywhere. I also think Dre is an underrated rapper, he has a great voice, great clarity and a dope flow.

Also that year was some other ish I enjoyed such as...

Slick Rick
Rakim
K-Rino
Pharohe Monch
Mos Def
Kurupt
Havoc
Prodigy
Nas
GZA

Well by that logic everyone having a November/December release don't stand a chance

DMX Party Up blew up bigtime in 2000, album came out in late 99

Jay-Z/UGK Big Pimpin' exactly the same

Juve's Back That Azz Up blew up in 99/00, album came out in 98

Etc.

bro have you missed the last 20 threads or so I've made addressing this issue?

and read the OP

let's say I still had to make the 1998 thread, you could use the blow up of Juve in 1999 to aid his case for winning MVP in 1998, since I've urged all people to understand that I'm being strict with putting contenders according to the release of their albums within the calendar year (Jan 1 - Dec 31).

that's how we've been operating this whole time and I ain't about to change that now.

Same with Jay-Z and DMX. Use their 2000s blow up to aid their 99 argument.
