The Source around that time....not exactly trustworthy lol. Liquid Swords got 4.5 back in 95.

Anyway yeah after the mixtape and all that I can see Nas as an outsider in the race but not top 2.

Post 2006 The Source kinda revived itself but like many traditional institutions of Hip Hop in the mid 00s it lost a young audience.
I remember XXL and Rolling Stone giving strong reviews as well (XL, 4 out of 5, the independent gave it 5 stars calling it the best political rap album since PE). In fact the only really bad reviews was Pitchfork and LA Times (who even noted the tape was better)

I think a lot of people forgetting this album might be where you were at at the time. As I said earlier, the mid 2000s were a funny time for Hip Hop as it was more fragmented and decentralized but I can assure from artists giving takes on the title, to MTV and Fox doing whole reports on it to the Bill O' Reily feud to the Grammy and Billboard recognition. Plus he kick started and headlined the Rock the Bells tour all that summer and was heavy in the promo doing stuff with Fila, Stussy, Crooks and Castle and Castles and Alife promoting the album, did the BET Hip Hop Awards and got a ton of nominations there and was pretty much on all the best of Hip Hop lists in 2008
Even when Wayne won the Grammy for album of the year, before they announced it, Will I am and T-Pain were like "Boy if Nas wins this..." :pachaha:

To me its the alternate album of the year and the go to political conscious album of that year. But as I said depending on where you were listening to Hip Hop at the time you might not have felt that, but I certainly did, but I just remember he was on all the best of lists for that year for sure.

Fair enough

Thanks for making a compelling argument

It definitely slipped my radar that year

You have to give the Source credit though for correctly rating OBFCL, The Infamous and Hell on Earth as better albums than Liquid Swords :wow:

Did you not hear the rest of the album and plus i always thought the pop songs except for Whatever U Like were pretty good
I heard the album back then. With a fully developed 28 year old brain :pachaha:
I'd also been listening to hip hop for damn near 20 years at that point and was able to place the album in its proper context. It was just another TI album. Good, not great.

Remember, at that point you hadn't listened to a single 90s East coast album except maybe Illmatic. Even now you've only heard that and Infamous. :sas2:
