People use the term regional in a variety of ways and it gets confusing.
Very few artists back in the 90s were getting nationwide "urban" daytime radio play.
The video shows evened out the playing field for all regions.
The east always had "real" hip hop heads almost everywhere. You could fail to go gold in the East and not be regional.
Most people in there regions fukked primarily with what was hot in their region. Most people aren't really hip hop fans like that.
In the South and (to a lesser extent the Bay) you could go gold (maybe even platinum) and still be "regional". People in those markets bought albums more for whatever reason. I'm from the Bay and I never knew anyone who had a 8Ball and MJG or UGK album - but they were going gold in the mid 90s.
I guess what gets me, is the utter disregard for certain artists/albums with identical sales and fanbases to artists/albums that are cysed as classics elsewhere...like, I have 400 degreez as my avi.. I obviously hold it in high regard, think its a classic and all that..and a search of this board alone will show im not alone...but nikkas will straight up be like, "eh, its a regional classic"..im like, IT SOLD 4 MILL...meanwhile, Illmatic took a decade to go plat and its this landmark hip hop album?...never ever ever heard that joint played down here ever
but..I aint gone shyt on a nikka for thinking its classic. There's receipts for its impact, at least on the East Coast and Nas is Nas..all im saying is, respect what other nikkas cyse if the impact come with receipts. We cant disregard what nikkas like E40, Three 6, Ball and G, UGk etc..did just cause they weren't cysed on one coast. Cause like I said, when we go there with nikkas from New York, the negs came out, nikkas all in they feelings despite the thread being full of receipts to the contrary
