I think lyrically speaking, BIG would’ve done better, but in regards to the overall mainstream success of the song- LL was far more marketable; for THAT type of song.

LL, already being a sex symbol to women at the time, pushed that song to heights BIG would’ve never been able to push it.

I can imagine the other thousand of stories where rappers wanted a beat and the producer sold it because they needed to eat

Shii happened to Yungeen Ace, producer was goin sell to him but sold to youngboy because he was the bigger name

BIG should have recorded it anyway. Is there a rule that says that 2 rappers can’t have very similar tracks?

People would have accused him of stealing LL's beat without knowing the whole story. It's definitely possible, but it wouldn't have the same sound as the original.

I was thinking Biggie could have done a remix, but he was probably over it by then.

J. Cole had the beat for "Stay," but he waited too long to pay and by the time he was ready, No I.D. had already sold it to Nas.

How? If Big did that then he/Bad Boy would deserve every law suit that came their way

I I just don’t see why they both couldnt use the beat.

Would it really have devalued the other’s song?

Dancehall artist did it all the time. They’d have 20 different artists on the same beat.

Dance hall do it on street mixtapes, no contracts involved.

In the American music industry, copyrights & publishing contracts are signed for music. They couldn't use the same beat or someone getting sued.

Biggie definitely could have taken the same samples and recreated a similar beat. That used to happen all the time back then. Everybody was sampling the same material, so you would hear the same drums or bass lines on different songs. Then you had Pac's "All Eyez on Me" and Nas' "Street Dreams." Same sample, but different tempos.

The problem is if Biggie just took the same beat. Unless he did a remix or a freestyle, he couldn't take the same beat and use it for his song. Like the other guy said, Bad Boy would open itself up to lawsuits.

I can understand BIG being tight but that ire needed to be aimed at Puff. This is this man's livelihood. Pay him. Its not his job to tell you he needs the money. It doesnt matter if he does or doesnt. You pay people for their services.

What would he blame Puff for? BIG told dude there was no budget, Puff told him the same thing, the question is why did he produce the track without any guarantees of payment?

He said Puff did promise to pay him...he just didnt do it. Whereas, Chris came up off that money immediately.
