I never understood why people rate him so highly.

I just figured that him and Pac dying so young is why.

I’m seeing this takes have more traction over the years and it’s kinda shameless

They were rated highly before they died. At a time where people were really fighting for that top spot.

Lets stop doing this.

I remember being a young teen when this shyt dropped. At the time, my recollection of that time was ppl loving the beat and Lil Kim holding her own rather well. At the time I ain't even care about lyrics and flow to the extent I do now....

But NAH for real, the way Biggie just floated on this shyt. Literally floated. shyt just seemed way too easy. Greatest God Given talent Rap has ever seen. :whew:

“Got stripes in NY like a Yankee uniform” :wow:

I still listen to Biggie every day. I remember in high school when I got my first car my man Alonzo said you can only listen to BIG for the first month and he only got two albums.

Music and flows are timeless can’t believe they killed the best

This was a remix. The original had the entire city on fire for a whole year before Puff added kim and biggie on it and switched the beat for Big’s verse when he re-released it on his album.

Biggie’s flow has NEVER been recreated, which is crazy when you consider how popular and influential he was.

We heard plenty of guys who rapped like Pac, or Jay, we can hear the Nas influence in a lot of guys, we had Mase impersonators, but the closest we ever got to BIG was dudes whose voices sounded similar.
If Biggie never died...Jay Z wouldn't be what he is today. He never could outrap Biggie. Biggie saved Eastcoast rap.

What does B.I.G.'s career have to do with Jay's?

And East Coast Hip Hop was literally in its prime before B.I.G. even dropped and after. Why would it need to be "saved"? Those are two very weird "only online" takes.

Biggie was on top..Jay in 98 couldn't be with Biggie's momentum heading into 98.
Pre Biggie album...Westcoast rap ruled the world in case you missed what Snoop Dogg was in 93.

For those that were there what was the hype for Biggie’s talent/ music? We all hear about the hype for Nas with BBQ and being anointed the Golden Child/ people waiting on Illmatic . But despite his elite talent never heard about that same level of anticipation with Biggie.

A lot of this is retrospective because it was super competitive then and a lot of heads looked at BIG as diluting the style of the East by riding the jock of the West that was dominant at the time. Granted that was mainly based off perception and single selection but it wasn't like the entire rap game championed him and Puffs production style/imagery. JD did the same with Da Brat as well as the G Funk influence was immense and had everyone switching it up which offended a lot of the purists.

Those that did click looked at him like a savior of the East and a way to reestablish dominance as it was obvious he was skilled with the pen and could write catchy anthems. The East/West war was inevitable in many respects, even without Big and Pac, because NY was elitist and nobody else got any spins as they felt they were beneath them as originators which is why when the NWA>Dre>DR>Snoop wave came and crushed the buildings they were left clamoring for someone to rep them and Big stepped into this void whilst many felt it was a foregone conclusion that that spot belonged to Nas as he was the golden child aka second coming of Rakim and Big was seen as style without substance in comparison.

Really so much of how it went down was already set in place as the seeds were sprinkled by now and would grow into what we saw. Death brings a lot of glossing over and rose tints but the above is how it was on the ground without varnish. As time progressed it became obvious to even the East coast naysayers that Big was a force to be reckoned with and his dominance of the scene was being established real quickly.

The rest is history.

There was huge hype & buzz around Big releasing his debut album RTD & when it did drop it lit the streets & industry on fire in 94 & carried over into 95. Between his Unsigned Hype column in The Source & the music he was dropping leading up to that, the buzz was brewing huge. Then he dropped that verse on Total's single in early 95: Cant U See & it was scorching. By the time he released the One More Chance remix video/record, it was a wrap. He was a mega star & pretty much the face of NY rap which sparked a lot of jealousy among some his peers. Anyone alive & old enough back then will tell you 95 was Big's year. You literally couldn't go anywhere outside w/o hearing him. The closest thing to this was 50's buzz & anticipation of his debut but Big's seemed more organic in retrospect & it was because of his talent, not getting shot or using any gimmicks

@kingofnyc can layout Big's singles & buzz leading into 95/96 better than anyone I've seen
