The problem is it might not be growing at nearly the rate of other demographics. 2% over a decade might mean our brehs are getting lapped in growth. Be interesting to see what the whites/hispanic growth rate is.
Some DC blacks are moving out of DC and into the surrounding Maryland counties.

Austin?

Seems like it's less and less negros coming

We do have an HBCU here so that may contribute a lot more than I expected

Yeah me and the wife just was in Austin last month and thought we was in Mexico it was so many fukking mexicans. Didn't barely see any black people anywhere except 6th street. Hell my cousin is from there and when I used to go visit he had like 3 black friends and the rest of his friends were mexican.

Austin is dusty too, at least the city, the suburbs are nice though.

Do you have any charts for states? Just want to see if Georgia is leading the state for black growth since Atlanta doesn’t seem to be on the top of it based on your research.

I don't know how to do charts...

GA is definitely near the top, I'm not sure the exact rank, but I'll do that later. Georgia has gained 330,702 blacks from 2010 to 2018, a growth of 11.21%---->GA black population is now 3,281,137...

I'll get around to doing states later!

Most of the list is not surprising since most of these cities are either run down or very expensive cities battling gentrification but I’d like to know the backstory of the cities i bolded and why black people are leaving these places.

I can tell you blacks leaving the Va Beach/Nfk metro are disproportionately headed to NC and Metro Atlanta. Part of it is the economy is pretty stagnant overall in that market and there isn't a large black power structure there at all for an area with so many of us. It's a really strange thing, anywhere else with that many blacks typically has a much better black infrastructure...

And yet, I've fallen in love with the area. It isn't without its positives but that is part if the the reason blacks are leaving...

Charlotte is becoming a black mecca of some sorts not surprised by the growth there

Minneapolis and Phoenix is suprising from a growth perspective I didn't know many blacks lived there.

declining

u see 5 cali cities not suprising.

the cali rent kicking them out with gentrification.

Chicago suprising I didn't expect a decline from the chi

but overall what I would expect from most cities

Charlotte without question is becoming a black mecca. It is a wonderful place to be if you're black and I had the fukking time of my life when I was there...

I'm surprised you didn't know about Phoenix. There's a ton of blacks flocking that way from all over the country, and that started in the 90s (the movie Waiting To Exhale was based in Phoenix and came about at a time that migration to Phx was starting)...they've had a large and prosperous black community for a long time out there...

Greensboro 40.5% (119,500) Way bigger black pop than half those cities

I wasn't clear initially on why I listed the cities I did...

Every city I listed is above the threshold of 800,000 metropolitan population, or will be in 2020 Census. The Census Bureau classifies "major" cities as central cities that anchor a 2-million person metro or more...

They don't have an official designation for mid-sized cities but I feel comfortable with 800,000 being the threshold. Again, that's a personal thing, but its consistent with every city I listed, they are all 800,000+ metropolitan population...

Any city with a metro pop below 800,000 is a small city to me. Greensboro is close but won't cross 800,000 until the early '20s, but yes, it has a lot of black people. It is a small city, though, at least in my opinion...

American history.

They are leaving for the same reason that immigrants that migrated to the USA move back to their original countries. Crime probably has nothing to do with it. Family, better weather and other stuff probably has more to do with it.

https://www.history.com/topics/black-history/great-migration
After nearly 100 years, Great Migration begins reversal

It amazes me how few people on here realized the reverse migration is an actual thing that's been in effect for awhile now...

Yeah this list is off there's 4 cities in the Norfolk metro over 40% black.

True dat...

Black Tidewater has a weak middle class though, and almost no black wealth of significance. Black Tidewater us overrun with crime and a lack of political and cultural clout compared to virtually anywhere else in the country with 500,000+ blacks (~520,000 blacks in the VB metro)...

I'm from The Beach, by the way...

NPN, Hampton, and Portsmouth are all losing total population. Blacks of reasonable means are leaving and the ones staying behind are poorer, uneducated, and lack the mobility. Black Nfk is declining sharply in much the same way...

To be very honest, I wouldn't recommend anyone to move to Tidewater over Richmond. Literally everything within the black infrastructure is greater in Rich than it is in Tidewater...

Didn't they just have race riots in Charlotte a few years ago? One of the most racists cities in the South.

The problem is it might not be growing at nearly the rate of other demographics. 2% over a decade might mean our brehs are getting lapped in growth. Be interesting to see what the whites/hispanic growth rate is.

DC is definitely growing faster with Asians, whites, and Latinos than blacks. The positive is black DC is still growing too, but you can see how its changed---->DC ain't a "Chocolate City" anymore...

If you chase the history of DC, it has an interesting story. It always had a pretty large black population, because DC is technically a southern city and was created from VA and MD which both had hella black culture. DC wasn't good enough for whites after the Civil Rights era and they left the city to blacks, but look at this:

1970: 71.1% black
1980: 70.3% black
1990: 65.8% black
2000: 60% black
2010: 50.7% black
2018: 44.4% black

So the overall black population is still growing but the share if DC that is black has undergone a tremendous decline as whites decided it's a good enough place to live again, and other non-black are making home in the city...

Just like other cities around the country, there are entire neighborhoods in DC that once were majority black that aren't any longer. Southwest DC was the very first place I ever stayed when we came to the East Coast and at that time there were hardly any whites...

Southwest today is only like 25-30% black, which when taken with the context that 20+ years ago it was 70-75% black, that's a dramatic demographic shift...

Now it's also true Black DCers are moving to the burbs, and suburban DC us still drawing blacks from all over. But I'm not a supporter of the mass suburbanization of Black America. 100+ years ago we weren't good enough for major cities, and when we were allowed in, we were segregated to specific areas...

50 years ago White Flight decided the cities would be left to blacks and took all of their resources with them and left us to figure out shyt haphazardly...

In the last 20 years the major cities are good enough for whites again and they're using gentrification as a tool to legally remove blacks and "reclaim" what they feel is theirs....

So the fact that suburban DC is gaining blacks but the actual District is watching black neighborhoods contract should be alarming to anybody who cares about DC. DC hasn't been under 50% black since the 50s, until the '10s rolled around, and DC is back up to 37% white, its highest % since the 60s...

This us why it was always embarrassingly amusing when The Coli clowned California (my home) for its declining black population; it showed who is well-read or versed in current events and trends on here. Literally the same exact pitfalls Black California is going thru is happening to the vast majority of major population centers in Black America----->and in more than a few cases, it's happening worse in some places than in Cali cities, most of which never had a large black population to begin with...

These places like DC that have gone from 70% black to 45% black in 45 years, and have watched a grip of black neighborhoods and cultural markers dissipate, are in just as much trouble as places as somewhere that was never 15% black at its highest and is now 5% black (San Fran)...

I thought there was a decent amount of federal government jobs there? I know the Navy has a presence.

Blacks are normally over represented in government, although that's starting to change. More minorities in general and less blacks specifically from what I see.

I need to visit Detroit one day

As of 2016, Toronto, Ontario, Canada has 442,015 black people which is more than...

Los Angeles
Indianapolis
Columbus
Dallas
Washington
Atlanta
Baltimore
New Orleans
Memphis
Raleigh

In case people want to say Toronto barely has any black people, stats here in black and white

EDIT: It's actually closer to +550k since then

Toronto is a top 50 populated city on earth.

They may have a lot of blacks but the percentage isn’t shyt compared to their whole population

Like itta bena, Mississippi is small as hell & has a small population, but it’s over 80% black, so you’ll be surrounded by your own.

I don’t think percentages mean much here. 400K black people means 400K black people which is a strong network of blacks.

A tiny city that is 60% black and has only 100K blacks for example still has a smaller network of blacks.

What’s the best city to move to? I’m between Seattle, Houston, Denver, Columbus, Atlanta, or Baltimore?

Where are you from, Books? Or where do you live? And what types if things are you looking for in a place to make new residence?

Memphis is 65% Black :wow:

.....and an overall mediocre place for anyone black to aspire to move to. The overwhelming majority of blacks moving to Memphis are coming from adjacent rural areas in TN, MS, and AR, or are a return of blacks from STL and Chi whose grands and great grands ran from Memphis 50-100 years ago, same as they always have...

Memphis ain't pulling no blacks from across the nation like that and is not a great place to be black at all...

toronto is less then ten percent black with little middle class or upper class black neighborhoods
and its not even that safe anymore

When you get to true major cities, above 2-million metros, or particularly the few cities with over 1 million in just the city alone, you can't rely on percentage to paint a complete picture...

440,000+ black people is a shytload if black people. It may be small compared to the total population but that many blacks means you can be in certain parts of Toronto and see more blacks than any other demographic. There's more blacks in Toronto than the entire city of St. Louis has people, and StL is thought of as a "black city"...

It's just like with LA, cats talk about how blacks aren't a large percentage in LA, and yet LA still has the 9th-largest black population of any individual city in the entire country. This is accounting for it's crazy black decline in the 90s and 00s, because before then, LA had a Top 5 black population in volume...

All of these things have nuance. I don't know TO like that, but I do know LA. LA County still has over 780,000 blacks, most cities and their counties aren't touching that and when you understand the history Black LA has, its gonna take a long time, if ever, for the black influence and impact on LA to be eliminated...

LA is 8% black and I can take you to places in LA where you'll see more black people in one day than you'll see in a week in the vast majority of the US. That's what's it's like in a major city, so I'd assume TO is similar to some degree...

Whats the percentage pf black folks though? Doesnt matter what the total quantity is if you still surrounded by white people everywhere you go. I want to be a majority not a large minority.

I get this train of thought, though....

This Haitian chick I was talking to a few weeks back told me on her visit to Charlotte she noticed there wasn’t any middle class black neighborhoods and that Charlotte was one of those cities that is white and poor black.

I’ve been to Charlotte before but never really explored the city since it was a road trip with my mom.

City looked very nice to me and it’s one of the few southern states I can see myself living in.

Doesn’t seem filled with fake people either.

Are there any upper middle class black parts of Memphis?

Every time I see Memphis it’s orange mound, fraiser or some other ratchet part
