There are a lot of misconceptions about what this movement actually represents. Now, I do have some issues with some aspects of it, but when I hear dudes like Tariq Nasheed say the black feminist movement doesn’t benefit the black struggle in any way I’m just :wtf:

First of all, bitter, “independent, “nyggas aint shyt” black women who write shytty blogs are not true black feminists. true black feminists are actual intellectuals and professors who have taught at and have had their work featured at universities across the country. True black feminists are people like Angela Davis, bell hooks, Salamishah Tillet. These women are RIDERS for the black cause and have been at the forefront when it comes to making people aware of the modern injustices against people of color. to say that these women are counterproductive to the black struggle is ignorant at best and straight up c00nery at its worst

black feminism was basically born out of two things. dissatisfaction with the marginalized role black women played in the civil rights and black power movement and dissatisfaction with the lack of recognition for racism that was inherent in the mainstream women’s rights movement. now granted, yes there are some black feminists who I think go a little too hard on black men to the point in which I feel like its counterproductive. but ultimately what their fighting against isn’t black men, but rather, the system of white male patriarchy, the same system that has oppressed black men for centuries. it may seem like a lot of them are criticizing black men but their ultimate goal isn’t to bash them but rather, to make them realize that a lot of their attitudes towards women stem from the same white male power structure that oppresses them on the daily. that’s their ultimate theory, that sexism and racism go hand in hand. yes, they’re pro-women’s rights, but their pro-black rights first and foremost.

this quote from bell hooks pretty much sums it up:
Yet, our feminist critiques of black male sexism fail as meaningful political intervention if they seek to demonize black males, and do not recognize that our revolutionary work is to transform white supremacist capitalist patriarchy in the multiple areas of our lives where it is made manifest

so before ya’ll completely dismiss the entire movement, I encourage you to actually READ works by actual black feminists. and I’m not talking about some shyt from a random angry black woman on youtube, but an actual academic essay. start with bell hooks, her work changed a lot of my preconceived notions about what the black feminist movement actually is

The thing is though, are black women oppressed because of their race or their gender?

Some would argue that their priorities are misplaced. Even if they were male wouldn't they still be marginalized because of their race?

Isn't racism the problem here more so than sexism?

absolutely. and a true black feminist doesn't deny that. that's the point I'm making

Just wanted to throw out this one star real quick.

that's cool. here's the problem though, you saw the title "black feminism" and your first instinct was to dismiss anything I had to say. I'm the type of person who actually likes to learn about something before I completely dismiss it. do you though

I don't give 2 fukks about any type of feminism. If a chick tells me she's a feminist, I pretty much ignore anything she has to say.

Nobody has a problem with the first wave of black feminism because their hearts were actually in the right places.

But now this new wave of feminism is a bunch of bullshyt. Black feminists nowadays promote an uprising against black men when Black men ain't never opressed black women :wtf:

These bytches think that a matriarchy is the way of the household and that women are inherently superior to men. This is what started that I'm a strong independent black woman shyt came from.

It consists of nothing but a bunch of man hating bytches and promotes misandry.

lol at me thinking I could generate an in depth discussion on something like this. forgot where I was posting for a second

Edit: didn't see your post AAKing, hold up

So nobody agrees with you, and the Problem is with us and not you? The civil rights movement gave black women more rights than the black feminist movement ever did. What good has the black feminist movement done for black women? In what way has it helped the conditions of black women in this country?

examples? names? I consider bell hooks as the face of the modern movement and none of what you said applies to her. she's anti white male racism first and foremost while pointing out how some of the the racist white male ideology has trickled down and affected some black men's outlook on black women. the goal, for her at least is to make black men aware of this, not to bash them or act like black women are superior

like I said, a lot of ya'll are confusing bitter women writing angry blog posts with actual intellectuals.

AAKing doesn't agree with me, neither does Bricktop. but they actually formulated responses that spark real debate beyond "lemme just give you one star cuz I don't care about this shyt"

as for your question, the work of true black feminists has made both black women AND men aware of a lot of the subtle injustices that the white male power structure has enacted against them. again, I'm talking about true academics here, not some angry chick on youtube who for whatever reason people seem to think are the representatives of the black feminist movement. that's like saying some idiot on youtube talking about how he wants to kill cacs is a true representation of black intellectualism

i took a course on black feminism in college. i want to thank you for clarifying this misconception a lot of these posters seem to have about true black feminism and just regular old arrogance and ignorance. the only problem is, not too many people care about finding out the real definition of it. and not too many people on the forum give a damn about black feminism enough to know the difference or understand the difference between what some women claim and what they're really about. i remember one time i had highlighted the same differences for a few posters bashing feminism and mislabeling it. no responses. instead, they continued to argue over the same bullshyt idea and blamed black female feminists for their problems when in reality the women that they were blaming were no where near feminists...

You didnt answer my question, so Ill ask it again, what exactly has black feminism done help the plight of black women? Marcus Garvey did more to let black people know about the injustices of whites than the entire feminist movement. J.A. Rogers did more to let black people know their true history and take pride in their race than the feminist movement.

So I'll ask again, what tangible benefit does the black feminist movement bring to the table?
