Black Feminist Debates Catcalling On CNN

The movement has been wildly successful in spite of it being racist, the only way to combat this is to provide women with an alternative solution that doesn't include legislation.

We can create norms around oppressive behavior to discourage it and show why it is wrong. Shouldn't decent white people intervene to try to undermine white privilege/supremacy and challenge other white people on their racism? Likewise, men should intervene to challenge other men when sexist and patriarchal attitudes and behaviors are expressed.

Who are we? We are friends, brothers, cousins, co-workers, etc. of these guys. They may not listen, but even presenting a challenge shows that there is a consequence to acting on a sexist/patriarchal attitude.

I was using the white privilege/supremacy example to make a point that you can relate to as a man of Color. The same logic applies for why we should challenge other men on their sexism and misogyny.

That being said, I do think that women should strap up and be prepared to defend themselves. All oppressed/marginalized people who are aware of their social position should embrace self-defense

I can't give you a guide for when to intervene or not except if you see or hear something that is fukked up, challenge it if you can do so safely, or if you are comfortable with the possible danger.

If you're asking for my opinion, I'll give it to you...don't assume.

Here's what I think:

Catcalling isn't a crime, no. It's harassment, disrespectful and sexualization. It's not a punishable crime. Shouting out "DAMN BABY!" as a female is walking by you in public isn't "simply talking to women." Neither is following her around.

Women don't have a problem with men "simply talking to us" - in fact, we appreciate mature men who approach us politely and respectfully.

How silly is it to think that men should get punished for "simply talking to women" - no one has ever insinuated that...I think men are the ones overreacting here...you should know the distinction between catcalling and just simply saying hello or approaching a female respectfully.

So just because women are expressing something they dislike (e.g. being followed, catcalled in public and sexualized) this makes us all 'feminists?' Take out the want for equality...if a female shouts out "damn baby!" to another female that's still harassment...or, if a female yells it out to a male. Stop thinking about it in terms of gender, rather what is/isn't respectable behavior towards another person.
