Interesting..so how did the self taught guy in the Op get in??
You basically just told nikkas..certs are useless without a degree
I'm surprised all other 6 certs coli nikkas never mentioned this

A degree may make it easier, but certs are more than enough. And once you get enough experience you do not even need them. I know and work with people that let their certs expire because their experience speaks for themselves. Some of the certs that i am working on getting will make me extremely desirable. If i get the ACDX or ACMX any company that has me as an employee get discounts on HP/Aruba equipment, the same if you have a CCIE in a discipline the company will get discounts on Cisco equpment. Certifications will help you get hired and not get fukked over on pay. The guy you quoted had entry level certifications and got a entry level job. Like i said in an earlier post, once you get some experience find a better job as soon as you can. Do not get stuck in an entry level job. If where you are working is not giving you opportunities to grow, you need to leave

Try to get in the ground floor of a NOC (Network Operations Center) or what quite of few people i know including myself become a contractor and/or work for small IT firms. You will get exposed to a lot and you should take any chance you get to work in higher level jobs. For example, you can be in a small or possibly larger company and you have you N+ but you are only racking and stacking the network equipment. Ask for opportunities to do more, like loading scripts on the equipment and usually you can get those opportunities because they will get a discount having you do it at your wage. Every time someone asks you if you know how to do something that you don't, say you do not but that you will be willing to learn. Always make it known that you will take on more work and you will get more and more experience.

I do not know if anyone else explained on here, but do not think getting you N+ or CCNA will get you a 6 figure job out the gate. They will help you get in the door but you have to get experience to make it. Also if you can find a job that will at least reimburse you for successful cert tests, if not give you incentives to get them.

IT is really one of the most difficult fields to break into. You really gotta be crafty. My homie from Memphis who used to be run shyt there put me on the game how shyt really is in this industry. It's all about skills. Blacks can't play the same IT game as cacs do but we can get just as far in a shorter amount of time as well. You just gotta be crafty.
U just said a whole bunch of nothing
"As a black man u gotta be crafty to break into IT"

I don't want to say they're useless, but they are very overhyped. My experience is more typical than all these success stories.

The key is to specialize early. Jack of all trades doesn't typically work in IT.

It's possible to get into IT beyond help desk with just certs, but it's really hard. The amount of work/time you will have to put in to get beyond help desk will be roughly the equivalent to the time it takes to get a degree.

The one thing I will agree with is once you get that first break, you're set.

Got into IT through the Military. Best decision I ever made :blessed:

God bless this breh :salute:

For brehs interested in the path to IT through the Military, send me a message. This is a field black men can dominate EASILY if we just have the knowledge early on. If you are trapped working a shytty dead end job, or if you have a degree you ain't using with tens of thousands in debt and fear what the future holds, or if you arent where you want to be in life and want to make that career change to IT but you're too broke or undisciplined...send me a dm

easier to get jobs with that?

I just looked up the google count architect very? What you think?
Not without a degree.

When people talk about breaking into IT without a degree, it's through networking and security, not cloud. Do not pick up anything related to cloud unless you are in software/dev/production support.

IT is the only field you can job hop and hiring managers/ recruiters don't give a fukk.
It is the nature of the field. Most jobs out there will be on a contract basis so getting something new every 1-6 months or longer is not a problem on your resume, but if you are with the same contracting company you will be using that on your resume
