Real talk, a Black Man is the most committed mawfucca of all time. A brotha is conditioned to be:

- committed to his family members, even if they ain't chit.
- committed to his 'hood, even if it's a cesspool.
- committed to his friends, even if they're draggin' him down.
- committed to his grind, even if they results ain't what he'd prefer.
- committed to his country, even if it isn't to him.

I had to pos rep you for this truth and I'm saving this post because you put into text what I've been trying to say for years. I'm 29, good job, great credit, no kids, but when it comes to commitment I'm like

For all the reasons you mentioned. Everybody leans on me. EVERYBODY. That shyt gets real stressful. It got to the point where I had to move away and I still got people giving me shyt for not coming back enough.

People always seem to have one negative idea about single-parent homes. Not every single parent household contains a mtoher that can't support her ratchet kids preaching about how men aren't shyt. Some single mothers were hard-working women that taught her sons to pick up the slack in the house, and thus there are more men that are independent and focused on improving themselves because they've seen how hard it was for their mothers to provide. No different than a kid whose father was in the military, I'd suppose. It's not every single-parent home but these exist.

Thanks for posting this. This is the type of home I grew up in. Only downside was having to be the "man of the house" so early but that shyt made me tough and independent.

I'm married and before that I played the field. I had certain rules tho. I never messed with women with kids. If she told me she had a kid that would be our last conversation. At least in college or a degree. And she had to have some morals. I've had maybe two real girlfriends that lasted a long time, but it was mainly sexual between every other female I met or talked to longer than a week. To be committed you have find someone who you want to be committed to. And sometimes women in general set themselves up for going after that one dude who at the time just doesn't want to do it. Then for the rest of their lives they are depressed over that one nig who didn't pay her any attention and they miss out on that one dude who is willing to make that commitment. Life isn't a race its a marathon take it easy and let that shyt come to you.

Theres so many factors that go into commitment/marriage lack of in the black community its impossible to have a intelligent discussion of it over a message board. Theres macro historic facots, like slavery, then theres welfare reform in the 80's, which stipulated that female welfare recipents couldn't receive benefits if they cohabiated with a male(some may argue that black women choose their welfare benefits over have a commitment with their black male significant others), which would lead to multiple generations of single female headed house holds. Theres been a downturn in the economy, which has caused all demographics to put off marriage. On a micro level, where are black women meeting these men who don't want commitments. Are they finding them in clubs, parties, are these environmants that are conducive to finding a life long male partner? How many of these women are hooking up? While theres a double standard that its acceptable for men to be promiscious, being with a promiscious person makes you not a viable candidate to make a commitment with, rather you're a male or female.
