"A new poll of likely voters, conducted by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies and sponsored by the Los Angeles Times, found that roughly half of Black men plan to vote for Caruso in Tuesday’s primary election. In fact, of all the men surveyed, Black men were most likely to support him.

It’s somewhat surprising — and as a Black woman, more than a little mystifying — given the years Bass spent working in the Black and Latino neighborhoods of South L.A. and serving as one of the two Black members of the city’s congressional delegation.

Of course, it’s not written in stone somewhere that all Black people must vote for Black candidates. Plenty of Black men and women surely support Caruso for their own sound policy reasons — maybe even Snoop Dogg, certainly Clarence Avant.

We are not a monolith, after all. I mean, just look at Larry Elder.
:comeon:

Indeed, this is why many political observers assumed she would have the backing of most Black voters in L.A. if she ran for mayor. Instead, despite strong and consistent support from Black women, the poll found an erosion among Black voters overall, led by men.

The question is why.

Is it just sexism? Or perhaps a related desire to uphold the patriarchy
, given that Bass would be the first woman to be mayor of L.A.?"

:comeon:

"Black men can be sexist, too, they admitted. Some see Bass as “sweet” or “soft,” not “hard” enough to be mayor like a shrewd, wealthy developer steeped in deal-making. As one Black political insider put it: “Why are we going to vote for her? Because she’s a nice lady?”

"Because if you can’t convince a majority of liberal Black men in an overwhelmingly blue city like L.A. to vote for the former head of the Congressional Black Caucus, what hope do Democrats have in red and purple states?"

Of cooooooourse it's sexism. And Black men who don't vote the way SHE thinks you should vote then you are a c00n like Larry Elder.

Throw in blaming Ice Cube.

Some were like Willie, who told me he used to vote regularly, but stopped because he doesn’t believe a politician — any politician — can solve his problems.

“You can work and your wife can or your child can work. The dogs can work. The rats and the roaches even working, and you still cannot afford to stay in a studio apartment in South Los Angeles,” he told me, taking a break from selling used DVDs and books out of his minivan.

He continued, his voice rising: “And when was the last time you heard a politician say Black man? When they think of the Black community, think of Black women or Black children, they don’t really think of us.”

Willie ran through a list of government assistance programs, from tax credits to food benefits for infants, arguing that they primarily benefit women. Meanwhile, single Black men are disproportionately homeless and politicians “don’t care.” This is why, he speculated, that Black men vote differently than Black women.

“But that’s OK,” he spat, shaking his head in resigned anger
He;s on point with it...and while Im not in his position, they have to stop thinking that everything is about criminal justice reform with us....while that's important-- if you straight up asked me about what i want....

I'd tell you that I'd want more outreach and money dedicated to getting BM screened for Cardio vascular, heart disease, diabetes, and other cancers...

i'd like to see more money dedicated to BM to open small businesses..and for more BM to be recruited to positions with major corporations with proper mentorship...

not everything has to be about "criminal justice"...it seems like everytime we come up they talk about "getting black men out of jail for weed convictions ....while ignoring the fact that 99% ofof us aren't in jail for anything....there are alot of us who do the right thing and are falling behind because no one seems to give a fuk

And i don't want to hear about "proposals", "studies" and "my brothers keeper" intitiatives...I want to hear about budgets with graphs...I want to see a check cut and I want to see things get done...the first candidate to do this has my attention and my vote

I posted the excerpt because there was an earlier thread about the topic. It only contained a youtube reaction to the column, but none of the actual column.
The writer has a slant, but she included quotes from differing voices, including the one in the excerpt. A straight hit piece wouldn't have included a man expressing that opinion.

Bro has that Mexican Machismo mustache, you can tell Karen Bass was not saying she was Black back then, she was passing as Non-Black.

Thx for sharing but most people only read headlines. Her headline/Twitter summary included crime, sexism, Ice Cube, and Larry Elder...lol. Nothing about the economic reasons. This was done on purpose.

Whats baffleling to me is that no one thinks to just ask black men what they want. They ask everyone else…whites, black women, LGBQ, Hispanics etc. They just assume that we’ll fall in-line and blindly support a candidate and then act surprised when we don’t show up like they want us to when all you had to do was just ask and craft a policy
What bothers me is how some dems would talk down black men during the most recent even prior election cycle. I distinctly recalled Symone Sanders doing that to some breh on twitter who was asking a simple question. It was appalling.

This ain't it. You LA c00ns better vote that black woman in. It's the governor, Senate, and presidential elections where need to apply this kinda pressure. Not push up on your local black politicians you should be supporting them you idiots.
Exactly

Edit: Nah I agreed from a small town perspective, but LA is visible enough that their mayoral race is National news so it has the same effect.

LA has neighborhood councils where grassroots politics should be the focus.
