White Germans were intrigued by Hans' hair and the color of his skin, he got mad pus*y back then.
In the states though, there was segregation, Jim Crow. In Germany there was none of this.
A lot of it has to do with worker movements and the belief in socialism and communism. The idea that workers of the world should unite, it was very much about all workers, regardless of race, so that had a healthy impact on race relations. Socialism and Communism have always benefited race relations and the treatment of minorities, as minorities and the working class have traditionally been near inseparable.
You are right. In the USSR, Africans that went there to study were treated better then they are today. A lot of Nigerian men that studied there married Soviet women with no problem, including one of my uncles. They were very aware that racism had negative effect on how the world perceives them. People forget that many ethnicities were part of the Soviet Union, not just Russians. They still had their problems...hard to eliminate racism out of the human psyche.

I've studied alot of history and one thing remains true almost always. Widespread portrayal of a time, event or situation is usually very skewed. If a person did something good, usually almost all of their faults are forgotten and people are criticized for bringing them up. If a person is considered bad, almost all the good things they ever did or stood for is erased and their faults and bad things put in bold and publicized. I found Hitler and the time of the Nazis interesting. I didn't agree or like everything he did, but to try to some him up as just another racist with too much power would be greatly oversimplifying the situation.
