I will say that Madlib's production was pretty lazy around that time. Lots of straight up loops, no chops, etc.

Exactly. Dude's catalogue is a prototypical unlistenable ball of cheese and outright shytty music. Sampling in its most ideal, artistic form is like making a fukking feast from a garbage can full of scraps, banana peels, dust, broken glass, and phlegm. Bob James should be thanking his lucky stars his tacky ass music is memorable solely because of sampling.
