Couldn't picture George Clinton doing this funk > jazz
Too bad Clinton been suing nikkas for years

I don't get how anyone can be truly mad. You put blood sweat and tears into making a hit

30-40 years later, some young nikka you never heard of takes your work, transforms it, puts it out and makes money off it.......

And this motherfukker can't even do you the solid and call you? Have the reps call? Ask nicely? Offer up 1%

Just straight up says fukk you I'm taking this. And then look shocked when the man comes back and says no you not

I agree on both sides. Madlib and Dilla were noted for not putting sample credits on records because some of the stuff they were sampling cost dough to get cleared. Plus Madlib is just about finding dope samples. Business shyt for later. Also, Sparkdala is mad old. It's not new. That song is atleast 5 years old or older. He has evolve into chopping up stuff to point where it's hard to tell where it's from. Which is another thing him and Dilla were trying to do. And Madlib isn't lazy, dude plays like a host of instruments and can produce. The song is old as hell, and they just released that record like 2 years ago on stones throw through itunes but that song been on tapes for years.

Now it would be nice if their acts would embrace that a new group of people are digging their music and giving it to a younger generation. As a producer myself, I've found myself becoming fans of the artist i sampled and brought records just to listen to their music not to look for samples. And it's not stealing. For samplers its just looking for hot sounds from the records we love. Rememeber hip hop started out as a genre for underprivileged youths who couldn't afford piano lessons and learn how to play instruments. So we hear the sounds of Bobs James and be like damn I wish I could play that or afford to hire him but since I cant, fukk it let me flip it.

I mean I also wish these guys who see it as an art form itself. Sampling sometimes is hard as fukk. To chop something up and create something new out of it. Picking sounds from different records from different genre with different tempos and make it fit and sound dope is art. It's beauty. We not stealing. We making art too dammit
Then make art and don't sell it. Then they'd have nothing to sue you for. The moment he put it up for sale, well now you're an a$$hole

This would be like me buying a Picasso. Painting a bird in the corner. Then selling copies of it as my work in Walmart. Picasso estate would sue me till my grandkids was paying the bill

Now if I just did the same thing. And never sold it. But showed it to all my friends. They wouldn't care.

Good analogy

“One of the problems that confront many ‘Hip Hop’ or ‘Rap’ artists is that they are unable to achieve an instrumental background musical sound quality for their works,” James states.

Ether.. I hate he said this, but its true.

When I use to dabble in beats, I sampled. Im outdated now. So, I left it alone. I cant argue with the originators of sampled musics. Its theirs. They made it

Hasn't he just been suing for the rights to his work that he claimed to not actually signed away

yea i read a story about donald fagan getting a personally hand written letter from kanye to sample a song that kanye was doing for his father and fagan initially rejected it saying
"if i was doing something about my father id just write it and compose it myself" but he let him sample it because it was a heartfelt plea, these dudes are old school jazz fusionists, they dont hate hip hop, they just dont like shyt being taken from them.
I love steely dan but Donald fagen is an old prick ... Just ur average old white curmudgeon until he sits behind a piano ... I'm thinking Bob James is the same way now

He was doing that too. The people who own his rights sued over 500 people for samples. But he also sued himself

Wouldn't you? I mean I get love is love. If you call me and you approach me right and my money is good. I'd let you do it. As long as the track wasn't weak

I think most these guys are mad that they never getting the phone call. Not from the artist, the label, nobody. You see this guy didn't sue all the other artists

Nautilus has been sampled TO DEATH. Lets not act like Madlib or Dj Design was the first ones to use it and to be honest, they arent the first ones to use the particular part of Nautilus. That snippet been done countless times.

I wouldn't know where to begin, I don't what you know about Stones Throw. Why would you apply the standard production agreement to Stones Throw? Stones Throw is essentially Peanut Butter Wolf, Egon (till 2011ish, when he decided to his own thing with Now Again) and a few other people in the background (J.Rocc and ect., not sure about their level of involvement on the business side but they are always around Wolf and Madlib). Madlib makes beats/songs in his bunker and gives them to Wolf to hold onto (for a release or shop around, there might be an intermediary but I doubt it).
This is all cool. Doesnt negate the fact, THEY BOTH KNOW you have to clear samples.

They are no diff as a producer/label combo.

Matter fact PBW is just AS responsible for releasing music that hasnt been cleared.

Thats the problem when you try to remain a obscure off the commercial grid type label, yet have a viable lightweight mainstream impact.

He doesn't have to sample. Sampling is an artform like any other sound of music.

I would like to see you make this:

PBW handles the business.

And this is where the original composer should re-evalute the reason behind the lawsuit.

It has to be more than Madlib sampling the track..

PBW handles the business.
SO therefore they must have some form of understanding if the producer gets sued for infringement:yeshrug:
