Thats genius. I had no idea thats how options worked. I may just take profits before eoy on that position and get a contract off of it for a year off.
So say you buy a contract for 20 that ends 1/23. And it goes to 50 5 months before that. Are you able yo sell/buy the contract at that 50 price?
the risk is if the price ain't what you expected in a year the option would be worthless and you'd lose your money. With shares you have them until you want to sell.
Nah if you exercise it (which requires a lot of capital typically), you pay the strike price so 100x20 for $2000+whatever the premium was...let's say 200. So you pay $2200, and can sell it for $5000. Whereas you may be able to sell the contract alone for like $1200.

Edit: you can also lose your ass rather quickly with options. Be wise.

They were 13.79 when I bought them back on 2/8. Now, the last price Thursday afternoon was 12.10.
So, when I say they're doing "great", I'm still not even. But they're doing much better than last week.
For it to break even, I need SPY to go up about 16% in the next year and a half. If COVID doesn't surge back I expect that won't be a problem.
