Damn thats unfortunate to hear I was definitely hoping to check out atleast one.

I've been studying portuguese the last 3 months so I know a little bit but none of us are fluent. My guy who lives in Sao Paulo is going to be coming up for a few days to help show us around so I'm sure that will be helpful too
yeah you're good, in fact cariocas are gonna like you as americans more than your paulista friend :heh:

3 months of portuguese will certainly help, just dont let yourself get overwhelmed. how have you been studying, you got a tutor?

as far as museums, there's an african art exhibit at museu nacional de belas artes, but it's one part of a huge museum. it's right near the biblioteca nacional, which should have some interesting stuff on afro-brazilians, i never got to check it out. both of them are in Cinelandia, where you should go anyway

I've got an informal tutor we practice conversational skills, then I'm using rosetta stone and watching movies, reading kids books in portuguese, etc. I will be sure to look up the bolded

Nah whats that about?
brazilian folk tale, probably indigenous but with heavy african and portuguese influence, which is why it's so well known, because that is the foundation of brazil - portugal, africa, indigenous

a one-legged kid who does magic. you can watch youtube videos of him to practice because most are made for kids. there's a famous book about him that a lotta elementary school kids read, and a lotta comic books. im into folklore so it appealed to me a lot :yeshrug:

Anybody have a heads up on which website to get an application for a tourist Visa? I tried googling and got confused. If you have to apply in person that might be a problem for me seeing as I am deployed.

@dc007 @Primetime21 @Malta

You have to do it through the brazilian consulate. You can mail in your stuff to them it does not have to be in person. If you google the brazilian consulate all the information on how to apply through mail will be on the site.

black history museums, you gotta go to the northeast unfortunately. Salvador is full of those, but Rio has none. i was in Paraty, a small town in rio (the state), and it was the first portuguese settlement there, and there's laws barring people from changing it to preserve the history. which is all well and good until you get to the re-enactment. i saw a singular black man dressed in slave clothes standing on the shore. i just looked at him like :beli:

it's invaluable to know someone who lives there. any of you 4 travelers speak any portuguese?

actually Sao Paulo has an Afro Brazilian museum in Ibirapuera park that I went to...its aight..im surprised Rio got nothing...u sure?

I actually went through a third party visa agency called A Briggs
https://www.abriggs.com/

Some consulates are now adopting policies where they are not accepting applications that are mailed in so if you aren't close to a consulate you may have to go through a third party. The one I linked above is pretty good in fact I got my visa yesterday and I just mailed the application in last week.
