My niece is only 5 and she already hates her hair and wants it to be long like all the other kids she goes to school with. Every day she goes to school she is the only black kid in her class.

How did you learn to love your hair? At a young age?

Tell her her hair is beautiful constantly. Show her examples of women who look like her, with hair like hairs and long hair that is her texture. This is so she can see that it is possible and that it is beautiful. Start teaching her to take care of her hair so it can grow and be strong at an early age.

Because she lives in a city with a 2 percent black population
:dahell:
black children need to be around other black children and live in black communities to have a good sense of identity and worth. nothing good will come from living in a city with a 2% black population. sorry but shes doomed if she stays there.

True. Thank the nikkas who run off to the burbs instead of forming a black middle class.

I'll be honest, this was me when I was younger. I remember I begged my mother to perm my hair, but was heart broken that it didn't hang free on my back like the other kids in school (the c00n ages :snoop:)

Didn't see the beauty in my hair until my teens. But yall are right, she needs to be around black kids… or buy her this book and books like it

I always tell my niece that she is the most beautiful girl in the world, she also doesn't have long hair but i transform her hair into cute styles and then she loves it.

I hated hair stuff as a kid because my mother insisted it be combed which took valuable time away from playing. Didn't actually start enjoying looking after my hair until my 20's, before then it was just stuff on my head, still is sometimes

Your niece has a good starting point since she already knows what she wants; long hair

Tell her she has beautiful hair and it can grow as long as she wants it to

All she has to do is look after it

And then give her the means and the tools and any physical help she may need looking after it

Some girls do length checks, make a note of how long the hair is now and then check however many months later, it feels good to see results

There are so many women out there who decided to put in the effort and its paid off. Show her pictures from this thread: http://www.thecoli.com/threads/natural-hair-appreciation.208644/
