It's an immature, odd response. A better one would simply be to make up an excuse for why you can't help...if you don't want to. Painting is not something that requires a dude, like say...moving a bookshelf into a new apartment. Most women who need to paint are going to ask their girlfriends to come over. Paint, drink wine, order some food...have a good time. Hell if a dude had to paint he'd likely do the same thing, but replace the wine with beer. So saying "don't you have a man" seems weird when my first thought would have been uh...don't you have girlfriends?

Even the "don't you have girlfriends" thought/response would be weird. I'd just say that I was out of town, or out with someone else.
