Do you not understand context at all?

If you want the "assist" to be an individual stat, you basically have to remove the outcome from the equation.

This is basically putting the "but his teammates suck" argument into a quantifiable number.

So if I'm up to bat and a guy gets thrown out stealing 2nd base but then I hit a HR should I get two RBI because it's not my fault the guy got thrown out?

I actually love the stat. One thing I always argued for Kobe is that if he had more shooting around him (especially during the Smush Parker years) his assist numbers would be a lot more impressive.

My biggest problem with the OP's post was that even if he did get the 3.2 assists per game that's still a completely shytty number so what's the point of trying to hype Russell up by using it. I'm far from giving up on Russell but it's not looking great so far.

It's not really a "what if" stat, although the name sort of encourages that take.

It's more like a "did he make the right pass" stat, which in an individual context is more important than whether or not the next player made the shot.
