With any degree, you're gong to have to put in some work outside of the actual curriculum itself. Gather a list of local copyright and public relations companies and drop by
Ask them questions about the process. If an author is doing a book signing, stop by there as well. You could also contact different publications and ask if they need any freelance writers and get some experience there.
