What pisses me off the most about this whole situation is the fact that this film, that normally would have gotten the straight to DVD treatment, suddenly gets a major release, with a good budget, AFTER Black Panther smashed the world.

Its like any positive image of black people, whether good or bad, gets countered by negativity in such a short time.

the godfather triology, goodfellaz, casino, heat, etc, etc, etc
Context is different; no one is using a criminal stereotype to marginalize Italian men out of the middle class and into prisons.

Italians are not being pulled over, and cars searched because of the mob. Whites in general have enough positive representation that their negative stereotypes don’t soak up half their media positions. We also know there are far fewer white boys who see mob films and aspire to do the same thing, because they were not raised with little options, as opposed to young black boys who don’t have positive role models at home, and look to entertainment as examples.
You are correct. Everything you said is true. While we've done our community a terrible disservice by glorifying crime in our entertainment, in our music especially, I still think that we should have the same freedom of expression when it comes to art that others have. So I dont think we should be barred from making films or music about the Black underworld. But I do think we need to be careful how we go about it. I hate to give up details of a newly released film but the main character does not practice random violence. He's firmly against it. He also believes in being extremely low key about his profession. The dope boys in the film who are proud of being dope boys are the clowns in the movie. The main objective for the character in the original and this remake is to get out of the game. He's certain that death or prison is inevitable and he wants to escape that fate. So the director, while making a crime thriller, also builds a sense of morality into the narrative without being hamfisted and preaching to the audience. So that's why I dont have any beef with the film from a moral perspective even though our representation in mass media definitely has real world consequences. shyt like Snow On The Bluff bothers me much more than this film.

What fueled my original post is that cacs were taken aback that there was sex, violence, and expensive things in this film. The main character is a drug dealer, for chrissakes. So knowing that going in, I'm wondering what they expected. I guess they're not used to seeing affluent Black drug dealers, which do exist. I guess they thought all drug kingpins were like Marlo Stanfield or Avon Barksdale.

Why would a modern remake of a historically successful film go straight to DVD?

So because of Black Panther, every Black movie is supposed to be a feel-good Black love fest?

How is anything in this movie absurd or lacking substance when we have 20 fast and furious movies, 100 Rock movies with him wearing the same exact outfit, etc? Nothing in Hollywood is rational or substantial nowadays. shyt was an crime/action flick and is getting criticized like it premiered at Sundance nshyt. I can understand not liking it if you don’t like crime/action movies in general, but saying it was objectively wack within the context of its genre is crazy

The fast movies don't really get good reviews either, they're disposable blockbusters. Whole franchise was a punchline before Fast Five anyway
