Agreed, but there is more to it. Finding small talk as tedious is OK, and needing some time away is OK. but there is a threshold that if crossed could mean other things may be a factor.

I knew I wasn't cut out for corporate long term when I couldn't A) pretend to actually care about the company during our big meetings and B) when my boss sat me down to tell me I had the potential to make real moves in the company but I was going to have to start networking and all I could think was 'yea no, I don't want to spend any more time around these phony middle aged white folks than I have to'.

Sadly though, this is the truth, and the life of someone workin in that job. Basically this is what I've been saying.

Ppl are sometimes just not a right fit for the type of job they are working in. Good for you that you figured it out for yourself though.

honestly, you don't HAVE to do shyt. you can stick to yourself and just do your own thing.

But in this world, you need to know how to play the game. Get to know ppl, and network. life isn't about just going to work on this one job, clocking in and clocking out, it's constantly moving and shifting. Being cordial and playing nice with ppl is how ppl get ahead in life. This is why they say "it's more about WHO you know, than what you know". your current job and the ppl you meet and work with now, could provide more for you in the future, and vice versa.

Did you know that most ppl would rather work with someone that may be a little less productive but is a good co-worker and easy to work with? did you know that ppl are more likely to give you a good reference or better opportunities the more they know you?

you know why good opportunities are often given to the ppl that the managers know more than not?

small things can get you really really far. and I don't mean just be a fake fukk like so many others (believe it or not, most ppl CAN see through that shyt).


Shieet, I've done it myself on a few occasions. I had to go on a couple business trips...some good go's, and I was able to pick my team. You think I'm taking crusty as Tom? who just keeps to himself and doesn't want to do shyt?? naw, I'm bringing Ricky and Steve, who do a decent job, but are also cool to be with cuz I want to enjoy my whole trip as well.

Is that working for just white people and black people? Because majority blacks are saying doing that or having to do that does not work for them. And there are people who get ahead and get promoted without doing that.

What type of work do you do know? Who you have acted different if it was all black folks? What are more stories you have?

Being talkative and sociable and amicable is the prerequisite for every job? No. A manager needs to adapt to diversity and being able to manage teams that are very social and top performers and teams that just want to focus on work.

First, I'm not saying that it is absolutely necessary for someone to do that to get ahead, BUT it does help. It also depends on the job you work in, and the job setting you have. 90% of corporate/office jobs are gonna be similar. An office with a bunch of computer programmers (typically introverted) is going to have an entirely different feel than say an office with a much of marketing or sales people (typically extroverted) in it. thus the social dynamic will be different.

It's all about finding the right fit. and yes as a manager (which I am), you have to find the right balance and I treat everyone differently on an individual basis. At least when it comes to communication style and tasks given. I try to find the right fit for each person, and put them in the right place to succeed. it's better for them, for me and the organization.

I know that for a lot of my hardcore IT guys just want to work on the computers and servers and shyt. and they try to avoid any of the social functions that get put on. But I also see that they are losing out, and they lose that face time with different ppl in the organization. They also miss out on opportunities to just get out of the office a bit and unwind "b-b-b-but I'm just too busy". So sometimes they get forgotten about when good tasks come up, etc. then they wonder why they never get chosen.

Listen, your work/job/career take up approximately 1/4 -1/3 of your life. that is a lot of time being wasted if you can't find a way to enjoy it.
