Can one argue that "It Was Written" was better than "illmatic"

Jay-Z's reigns of terror
:scusthov:

I remember in 2001 when Eminem was about to get a championship run and Jay was hesitant to put him over. Vince calling for the bell while Em had Jay trapped in the H.O.V.A Hold is still one of the greatest moments I've ever seen in this business.

The suspect promos leading up to it :scusthov:

Jay-Z saying a white guy could never be champion :damn:
Jay Z had a terrible title reign after that - the blueprint 2 era. There were some classic matches though - the fatal 4 way with Killer Mike, Twista and Big Boi was decent, lots of high spots in there. The Meet The Parents promo was pretty good too.

Pharrell was a GOAT manager around this time though.

Ones got to look at the whole history of the business and different talent to understand why things are the way they are. Gotta look back at those Billboard Wars between universal music and emi. Now you young guys that weren't around won't remember when the Beatles invaded emi. They were boosting attendance, selling merch, ratings thru the roof. Nobody could stop them. Universal music tried to counter with more attitude and edgier superstars like kiss and black sabath. This in turn helped them in the war but the Beatles weren't gonna go away that easily.

The problem was that emi wasn't running their company correctly. So everyone knows the story about how universal bought them out and one of the universal executives made a surprise appearance at an emi artist concert. That's what I think changed the industry completely. That buyout. The main competition was gone so universal music lost its competitive edge. Started getting lazy with the way the converts were being booked, the talent was uninspired to write better lyrics, they gave opportunities to artists that wouldn't have gotten them in the old days.

The problem was that other companies like Sony Impact and New Warner Music weren't doing anything to combat the Universal Music Entertainment juggernaut. They were focused on growing their own fan base but not putting out much decent product. Around this time, a lot of independent promotions started coming out. Seemed like anyone that had dreams of working in the industry was getting put on and they expected a push out the gate. This started the decline of the industry. Artists that couldn't do promos, gimmick characters with little abilities to call a match or even sell. Thankfully today things have improved a bit and new labels have come from the underground with different artists and genres to give us some variety. Plus universal has been putting on better cards lately and bringing in newer talent. What I'm waiting for is to see if Jay-Z gets that sixteenth title reign and makes history yet again.

We gotta study the history and see what went right and wrong to better understand why the booking is the way it is now.

Can we all agree that Chris Brown's 2009 heel turn came at the right time? People were kinda of getting tired of the nice kid babyface when he made his 2005 debut. Even when they gave him Rihanna as his valet in 2008 he still wasn't really getting over. The turn on Rihanna at No Way Out 2009 came out of nowhere. Once he aligned himself with the Bloods faction it was complete.

When he changed his theme music :wow:

You could tell Jigga's workrate was declining after Eminem won the championship. Then Nas took him down at the Tokyo Dome and you have a man who the fans just wanted to go away.

Then he returns in 2003 as a face and just starts putting work in. His Black Album era had some of his most underrated matches. His Last Man Standing match against Em at Moment of Clarity is at least top ten for his career.

Who had the best gimmick change 2Pac or Nas?

2Pac: made his debut as a dancer with Digital Underground during their ring entrances and decided to get in the ring with the Black Panther gimmick but the neckbeards weren't feeling it. Changed to the Thug Life gimmick and started getting over and had a nice little mid card run as a baby face. Was turned on by Bad Boy and got with Suge Bischoff and became a heel and got a nice run as champion until he overdosed. His feud with Biggie ushered in the East Coast vs West Coast era.

Nas: started out as a humble mc with a good workrate but couldn't get past the mid card. Changed to the Esco gimmick and got over with a few championship runs but his work rate dropped and he got lazy. Jay-Z lit a fire in him and he came back strong with his Stillmatic gimmick and has been eating good.
