Illmatic is a unique album that gives maybe the most detailed description of the projects and a young rebellious teens perspective of it all. It Was Written is a solid album but there's nothing about the album as a that's unique thematically.

Illmatic was superb. It was iconic lyrically, beat wise, substance wise and has stood the test of time. Its a truly classic album but IWW was even better lyrically IMO. Nas was able to step up his Illmatic flow, street knowledge and ghetto wisdom by ill story telling and even more technical skills. He had to top BIG, which i think he did easily.
