Can someone explain Google's logic behind messaging in Android?

I mean that's what they're doing. Eventually messenger will be phased out completely and then Hangouts will be the only messaging app.
It'll be great when that day finally comes (even tho I still don't understand why they even bothered developing messenger separate from hangouts). But that only solves half the problem. They need to make it the default when you open the phone. They need to have it (or really, it's protocol) ingrained within the OS. Even if other messaging apps run on top of that protocol.

I get that a big hurdle is dealing with the mfgs, but shyt call a meeting with the big 3 and figure that shyt out! They all win by having a stable, well integrated Android messaging system. I know companies can be stupid sometimes (I still remember VZW forcing their navigation app on to my phone...seriously, who at vzw thought it was prudent to continue developing and funding that shytty app when we had access to Google maps on our phones? :mindblown:), but talk some sense into them, damnit!

Also, Chrome is Google thinking forward as more and more websites are dropping Flash and switching over to HTML 5. The Browser app still has it's uses since you can change the User Agent as well as use Flash (if you can find the APK)

It's really just them giving you options breh...if they force everything together before it's ready it becomes a clusterfukk

My GS5 came with chrome and only chrome. Other browsers in play store are cool for those who want some niche use or just don't like chrome, but it's better for the Android brand if there's one, clear standard.

Switched over to GroupMe years ago because half of my people used Android (including me) couldn't reliably communicate with our iOS friends (and sometimes each other) especially with pics/video. Messages would be missed/duplicated/etc. MMS itself in Android is still clunky sometimes (I've used it much less in iOS, so I can't say how good/bad it is)

Google has a tendency of doing a bunch of good shyt on paper, but rarely following through enough to make it great. If they could create some standards such as to use Google Play, your handset must have one and only one browser, messaging app, music player, etc. installed (the official Google version) it would go a long way in preventing some of this from happening.

Yes MMS is clunky, and that's my frustration. I used to think it was Android, but I've come to the conclusion that is inherent to MMS. It's just that iOS does a great job avoiding MMS whenever possible.

GroupMe is cool, only problem is convincing people to download it and use it. If their messaging is fine, most won't bother.:yeshrug:

Messenger is the text app for Android

Hangouts is the evolution of gChat, which has been out since before iMessage, and does the same thing as messenger along with gChat

Apple fanboys once again puzzled when they step out of the cave :smh:

How does default text app that comes pre-installed on Android phones fit into this?

Ehh it's just how Google works. They put shyt out as stop gaps/trying to please everyone and then eventually it all comes together in the end. This is why when you start up HO for the first time it asks you if you want to use it as your default messaging app. You just need to take the 2 seconds it takes to notice if you're sending an SMS or a hangouts message.

I don't use the messenger app because Hangouts does everything the messenger app does already.

Features like what?

I've d/l'd hangouts to give it another shot....It's looking like I'll be heading back to messenger soon, smh

If you say so bro. This is a well documented issue, but there's always one who wants to act like it's non-existent

I have to agree with this. It certainly bogs down my phone when people are active in the group messages.

I'd also like to know which features were removed from Hangouts.

This is the problem though, there doesn't even have to be a meeting. Google should be the leader and MANDATE the terms of using the Google Android software and infrastructure. If you don't like it, go build your own shyt on top of AOSP Android like Amazon and have to deal with all of the extra headaches associated with it.

They would eliminate 90% of the quirks of Google Android (unnecessary skins, stripped features, missing apps, late updates, etc.) if they made the manufacturers abide by their rules. Hell, the manufacturers could still develop all that dumb shyt if they want to. Just make it a post install option in the settings or Play Store menu. All Google has to say is you can't modify the base OS code without some good reason that will be integrated into future releases of Android for everyone. Most of the crap being done can be done through apps though.

Obviously this won't happen because they just need Google stuff on your device to get paid and don't really care about the experience though. :francis:
