Can someone explain Google's logic behind messaging in Android?

This is the problem though, there doesn't even have to be a meeting. Google should be the leader and MANDATE the terms of using the Google Android software and infrastructure. If you don't like it, go build your own shyt on top of AOSP Android like Amazon and have to deal with all of the extra headaches associated with it.

They would eliminate 90% of the quirks of Google Android (unnecessary skins, stripped features, missing apps, late updates, etc.) if they made the manufacturers abide by their rules. Hell, the manufacturers could still develop all that dumb shyt if they want to. Just make it a post install option in the settings or Play Store menu. All Google has to say is you can't modify the base OS code without some good reason that will be integrated into future releases of Android for everyone. Most of the crap being done can be done through apps though.

Obviously this won't happen because they just need Google stuff on your device to get paid and don't really care about the experience though. :francis:

On Android I have Textra which in my opinion is the best SMS default replacement app.

Textra SMS - Android Apps on Google Play

The closest to iMessage is Whatsapp and SOMA (it's like Whatsapp but with videochat)

SOMA Messenger - Android Apps on Google Play

Whatsapp can't even send gifs :patrice:

Anyways, I'm not really interested in a messaging app that would require my contacts to join....everybody wouldn't download an app just for me. I use whatsapp when I travel internationally, but aside from that I just want one app to use to send messages be it text, pic, vid, group, whatever.

How does default text app that comes pre-installed on Android phones fit into this?
the default app is just something simple for grandma to send texts. if you want something with more options, get hangouts

Ehh it's just how Google works. They put shyt out as stop gaps/trying to please everyone and then eventually it all comes together in the end. This is why when you start up HO for the first time it asks you if you want to use it as your default messaging app. You just need to take the 2 seconds it takes to notice if you're sending an SMS or a hangouts message.

I don't use the messenger app because Hangouts does everything the messenger app does already.

OK, what the difference between the default Text app and Google Messenger?

It shouldn't be on there in the first place for the most part. It's simple too. Just mandate that you can put all the crap on the phone, but only with the user's consent post setup (opt-in menu) AND make it easily uninstallable.

Receiving video on android is a joke. shyt looks like vhs found footage

:russ: turned sideways and shyt. Looking like the Blair Witch Project.

Oh no why is Google giving us all these choices!

Miss the point brehs

OK, I think I'm starting to get it.

1. Google's Messanger app >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Default preinstalled texting app

is the same as

Google Chrome web browser >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Default preinstalled web browesr

2. While Hangouts is supposed to be much more than that. Basically Google's version of "Skype".

The problem with the bolded (and the topic of the OP) is that each one of those apps is different per manufacturer and sometimes even per device model (which is different from the messaging app that is installed on a base Google Android ROM) :mjlol:

Google let Android get too out of control. It looks better than ever but I think Kit Kat was the last good release.

It's just too messy now, still can't beat the customization though.
